Default Porsche 928 2006 Valuation in Classic Motorsports

I’m surprised no one has posted this already.

From Classic Motorsports (March, 2006 issue, p. 38) – Andy Reid's AuctionAction column - Top 10 Cars to Watch in 2006

2. Porsche 928: I know, having a 928 on this list might seem a bit crazy, but these cars have been getting a lot of press recently and have been creeping up in price. It used to be that you could get an early, single-cam car in great condition for $5000. Those same cars are now selling for as much as $10k, with the later quad-cam and GTS models holding in the $30s. This is one of the best GT cars of its time that offers a modern driving experience and performance equal to many exotics.

Not that I'm looking to sell or ever get my outlays back...

Too bad they didn't get it when the 928 was in production, might still be around if they did.

That just goes to show that all of us are ahead of our time! In regards to 928's anyway....but it looks like Porsche is thinking about a new 928 in the near future....I wonder what a new 928 model (say in 2009) would do to our 928 values?

this has been bantered on a couple sites lately,
next year is the 30th anniv of the unveiling
2 yrs ago you could get a complete 78-79 parts car/resto project for $500-1000, now it's twice that (as evidenced by the salvage 78 going for $2k TWICE)... that being said, I think it's great that our cars are going up in value, it's LONG overdue

Ooooooooohh,
I bought mine just in time.

Does this mean I can tell my wife it is an investment?
Mmmm, maybe I should take some money out of my retirement plan and buy a couple more

So, my '86 "later quad cam" model is worth in the 30's? I don't think so. Even the S4's aren't that high (except GT's).

Brian if and when Porsche builds a high performance front engine V-8 coupe (even if it has 4 doors) it would not be a number name but something like Cayman ,Cayenne, Boxster.Panamera. And I would expect Ford to bring back the Edsel name before Porsche calls another car a 928. The 928 was a dismal misadventure in automotive marketing. How they could take a GREAT car and only manage to sell some 60,000 plus in 17 Years averaging what 3,500 per year simply shows that you can screw up just about anything. Little wonder why the currrent management stresses marketing over design and engineering. The popular image of a 928 held by those who do not own one and probably never drove one is that is a overweight, overpriced when new, expensive to maintain ,troublesome car, difficult to work on car with poor resale value that does not look or sound like a Porsche. And it is that image which would prevent Porsche from using the 928 model designation in the future. Note that it matters little if that image /perception is true or not it is what the vast majority of people believe and the result is relatively low demand for the 928 and subsequent low resale values. In my opinion, had the original 78 928 been fitted with the 5 liter engine which they had available with 300 plus hp it would have had immediate supercar status especially if they had RACED it but so much for the what ifs and couda shoudas. The end result is the 928 is an incredible bargain for those who think for themselves and can appreciate what is NOT POPULAR ! Just do not hold your breath waiting for the "new" 928.

you left the "S" off of GTs there Dave....not many GTs are bringing in the $30K + range either.

Jim,
talking of current management and marketing; I just read a little book on the Boxtster ( a gift )by John Lamm, in which he interviews Wendelin Wiedeking who says he is sure the 928 would still be around had it been placed as a modelline next to the 911 instead of launching it as the replacement for the 911. Wiedeking does add that that is easy to say in hindsight.

He got that line wrong, Its one of the best GT's of ALL time and it IS an exotic. You don't lose exotic car status once you had it.

If the panamera 2 door looked anything like the images on here and around the net lately, it would definately have a positive impact on prices, because the average person would be shown the light as to how good our cars are.

But i am not complaining as things are now. JB's line that he posted in other threads sums it up pretty good.

JFYI IMO exotics of the 80's(928, TR, countach, lotus, 3x8, astons) supercars 959, GTO, F 40

I think what is going on now is a rising tide floats all ships and we're catching up a bit. A tiny bit like the housing market of the last 5 years.

Post #5 in the above referenced thread pretty much sums up what kind of mental giants we're dealing with. He states:

It always drove like a lumbering whale , very " big American iron " , Corvette feeling .
After all, what do you expect from someone (MKW) who's too cheap to have a paid Rennlist Membership... He's probably never so much as sat in a 928, let alone driven one...

Why do you bother about what some people who drive a 911 say? As said before, most people choose a specific car because they want to belong to a certain group of people. Defined in very broad terms by the marketing people of the factory. These people are really losers. The 911 community has a large percentage of so-called fashion victims. I couldn't be bothered less with what anyone has to say about my cars. If he happens to own a 911, I just think he paid a lot of money for the privilege of using these marketing arguments. It's pathetic and you should be above it. Please don't bring anymore of these "look what he said" threads into this forum. It's embarassing. I'll have to quit my membership

Cheers,

Piet
