Default Engine Temp Question

Typically the pointer on my temp gage is just about mid range while driving. When in traffic, the pointer tends to drift up to about 3/4 range, the aux fan kicks on runs a bit, temp indicator drops down to about mid and fan kicks off. During a hot summer day the aux fan will run continuously in traffic. The car does not overheat, but only because of the aux fan. Is this typical, or is this an indicator that my fan viscous clutch is going south?

Actually, I think it's an indicator that the whole car has gone south -- to Louisiana, that is Sounds like it's all operating as it should. Do keep an eye on the gauge when it's running nonstop, and make sure the gauge isn't climbing. If all is operating properly, there is a pretty wide margin beyond the point where the fan runs continuously -- but it could be a sign that something is marginal.
