It shouldn't do that... Hmmmm. Have you tried swapping tem? They simply screw in and out. It might be a bad LED. If it stays the same, then it's probably the inductive coil underneath. It's about $40 IIRC.

Several people have mentioned the noise - seems this must be a failure mechanism - its not normal. Seem mostly the LED's still work - but it has to be the inductive unit that drives the LED's. I have no idea why they aren't just direct drive LED's anyway - doesn't make much sense to me.
I'd replace the driver unit - as Andrew says if its only one side swap the drivers from side to side & if the noise moves there is your culprit.

Both mine make this noise too, sounds like some kind of capacitive discharge, like an electronic camera flash. Yes, it is very annoying.

For 1978:
1 - Forestock locked, unable to cycle the action.
2 - Big noise/Smell of gunpowder/lots of small holes or one big ragged hole in something/forestock unlocked, can now cycle action/spent shell ejected
3 - Very rare. Usually due to mishandling "alarm". Usually indicated by shell jammed sideways in front of bolt. I've only seen this once when the revlimiter was attempting to operate alarm.
4 - Usually just racking the action back and forth will make any would-be car thief make tracks. Secondary/escalated alert very similar to #2 above.

Hi Alan,
I modified my 88 to the door lock post LED lights. They are new, and do make a capacitive discharge noise. It is very faint though. Not annoying at all (mind you, I have been walking around jet engines and loud drinking establishments since I was 19 ).
Cheers,
Michael

I swapped them this morning and the noise level is the same on the driver's side!
Andrew, the conductive coil is part of the LED that you unscrew or is that what you screw onto?

Gio,
Well actually its both - each have an inductive coil (on the LED and on the driver on the end of the wire) - so time to swap whatever part you didn't last time....

Actually the led passes through it. See the pic below. The thing with the green sticker is what you would need.
You know... you might consider getting non-led locks. Probably cheaper... but not nearly as cool!

No one has mentioned the lock button on the console above the clock on 88's. I am not positive I will have to check when I get my car back but IIRC it flashes if the alarm is going off. Not something that I can get to in the next couple days. Anyone wanna give it a try?

Andrew, you are right on the money. The thingy with the green sticky is the culprit (cost about $32 so I will be placing an order). I unplugged it and it appears not to have any negative effect on the alarm system.

Get the later model modules to replace the 1989 modules you have. Apparently enough dentists' wives complained about the bleeping noise when they came out with it new. I may do this too. It would be a lot safer driving around here in the 'hood with the doors locked. The way it is now, carjackers would quickly abandon the car because of the noise.
