GTS v 456
Pristine low mileage GTS models are selling upwards of 60K, the same kind of money will buy an equally low mileage Ferrari 456 of the same era or newer. How do these 2 compare? Valuewise the Ferrari appears more appealing but I suspect maintenance costs are insanely high, plus I suspect a GTS will last many more miles. Opinions?

Hmmm...didn't know you could get one of these, pristine and low miles, for that little. It was a $210K car in 1995. I don't find any for less than $80K.

It depends on if you get hosed on the maintenance of the 456. A buddy of mine has one, and he just drives it all over the place. The idiot lights on the dash keep lighting up, and the car has been to FNA several times to no avail.
As much as I love my 928, in choosing another 928 as an addition, vs a GTS, I would go with the 456... The GTS while very good, has 90% of the 456's performance, but the 456 looks nicer. (IMHO) AS far as sound from the engine....... No contest, the 456 wins hands down. Drive one, or have someone take you for a spin and rev it up a bit... Just pure music..
Yes, I know, sounds traitor-like, but my S4 has as much power as a GTS, and a 456 is a very nice car in spite of its maintenance.. Then again, I know a few Ferrari wrenches who are not too bad on the labor rates... So maybe I am biased...
Short answer... GTS vs 456 for $60K, both in same condition, I'd likely go for the 456...
On another note, I would take a 550 Maranello over a GTS any day of the week... Drive one, you will understand...... It has a different character than a 456...

Were it I, I'd buy a very capable very lovely 928S4 5spd at 15k and buy the Maranello as a Sunday car. The S4 would serve as a getter when the Maranello's in the shop every 2k to get valves adjusted.

do NOT buy a ferrari for that little, the car will be beaten to death and you'll have issues.
Like any other car, paying a premium for a nice, low mileage example is better.
Of course I doubt I'd ever pay $60,000 for a 10 year old car - maybe it's the fact that i was 8 years old back then and none of those cars in that generation really appeal to me - aside from the 993

Vanc ... LOL Dude most of us here drooled over 1967 Lamborghini Miuras and Ferrari GTO's about 20 year before the 456 was made .. So they most surely do appeal to us.

Yes, prices for 456 are unbelievable, one of the fastest drops in all of automotive history, post 2000 models rarely fetch more than 100K even in top shape. Comparing the GTS to a Maranello seems pretty baseless, the 550 is better valued and is a pure GT sports car, in spirit and value the 456 is the only direct competitor to the GTS. Maybe I'm stretching to close the gaps between the GTS and 456 in terms of pricing, but they sure are close enough to have prospective buyers wondering!

actyually what I would get is a testarossa....
no wait
a 930 turbo.
BAH! Too many choices, not enough money!
frankly I never liked the shape of the 456, it was a big yawn in terms of styling, looks like an earlier RX-7 or something. not my thing.
Frankly I don't think i'd buy a ferrari that's only ten years old - the depreciation cycle on ferraris is about 20 years, maybe 25 on the 308 - and then it begins to go up again -
Has anyone looked into the ferrari 355? That's a gorgeous car, I much preferred that to the 360 that followed it.
