OK, here I go....a 911 owner considering a 928 as daily driver

Major maintenance items to ask about/look for:
Recent timing belt/water pump change? (a MUST)
Steering rack replaced? (they go about every 70-90k miles)
Motor mounts replaced? (if anywhere near 10 years old)
Shocks/springs replaced? (if original, shocks are shot)
A/C working? (can be costly)
I believe those are the major costly/difficult to replace, PITA maintance items that will really affect the life of the car, how it drives and how it handles (with the exception of the A/C). Most everything else can be done fairly easily and at somewhat reasonable costs (other than intake R&R).

Ed,
For a brief summary of what two senior managers at Weissach thought about 911's and 928's, see my post on page 2 of the 928 Rennlist Forum about "Excellence Magazine article", or search for Hans Mezger in the text.

No reason not to drive a 928 every day. My GTS has been a daily driver for the last 6 years with very little downtime. Based on my experience the cars like to be driven and give less trouble if exercised regularly.
The only issues are:
- Gas expenses could be less with something smaller
- I wouldn't have to park in the far corners of all the parking lots
But I'd have less fun....

Roger called me yesterday. He's a super nice guy, and it sounds like he's got an awesome setup. He ran out of garage space in the house, so he built a new playhouse on his property, and it sounds like it's 928 Central in DFW area. They are always jumping on one project or another on each other's cars, and banging it out pretty efficiently. He now has 6(?) of these suckers, a couple being parts cars. Truly as sick as I've met.....

First- you have to see it, paint condition, int leather and carpet, engine bay clean??
Second- you should drive it, sound good, idle good, car should stay straight if hands off wheel (don't try on a turn) , of course performance, shift well
Third- do you WANT it??? (are u happy paying the price after 1 & 2)
Fourth- PPI by some dis-interested 3rd party
Edit: the above may sound obvious to the point of not posting but it really isn't. A 928 is not a utility item and each one is very unique. They are like art and usually have meaning to the owner beyond the market average or bluebook. So an average price will have little meaning. You will have to pay what the owner wants if you WANT it bad enough. When i bought mine the wife of the couple selling it had to go into the backyard as she could not watch it go.

No doubt that is sick .... sounds like a great guy! Count me on on a visit.
I suppose I should introduce myself to the other 928'ers here also. Like Ed, I'm a 911 owner who had been shopping for a 928. Unfortunately my 911's engine is now in for a rebuild in a track related accident so my search is on hold while I wait to see how bad the financial damage will be. We also have a 968, my wife's daily driver.
Some pics of the 911 and the garage are here: www.BigBendVilla.com

Ed & Rob,
Come on down.
Rob let me have your email and I will copy you on the one I will send to Ed.
We are getting together next Saturday (2/4) to help run power down to my newish garage.
Not so much 928 but a great crowd willing to help on this occasion.
Probably will be some nice 928's there for you to see.
I will, as always, be in the garage most of this weekend so come round if you have time.
Everyone else drops in.
Rob,
Chuck Schreiber is in Plano and on this board.
Best,
Roger

Thanks Roger. I may be out crusing a bit Sunday, if you're saying you'll be around this weekend too, I may swing by?. Tomorrow is Daytona day, and I'll probably be planted in front of the TV at least part of the afternoon.

Hello, my name is Ed. I have a sickness.
Roger was kind enough to let me drive one of his '82's and his '93 GTS today. I "likey" the Porsche 928 a lot. I mean A LOT!
PS- I still love my 911, but then again, they are totally different experiences.
