ah..someone else read the Excellence article

20K will get you a very nice car. If you do any type of work on your 911 the 928 wont be any harder. There is a huge resource of help on the list here and via websites...

An equal kick, just in a different direction. You'll love it. I have both too.

Mark.

Get a 5-Speed now so you don't have to look for one later.

Question

Jumping in on this thread as I'm in the same boat as Ed - current '75 911s owner who's looking to replace my daily driver (Audi A4) with a 928, preferably '90 or '91 GT.

In addition to the advice you've already offered, could I ask your opinions on 928 pricing among private party sellers? For a lot of the nicer '88 - '91 cars (not later GTS's), I'm seeing prices that are 2.5 - 3X the Kelly Blue Book "excellent" level for the mileage. I want a nice example and am willing to pay a significant premium over Blue Book...but 3X that amount seems excessive. So what I'm really asking is: How to I gauge what a used 928's value really is? Are there any guides more accurate than KBB? I'd even be curious to hear what any of you who own GT's or other 5-speed 928's paid for your cars (and at what mileage).

Thanks in advance!

Well I knew there was a reason I save all my old magazines, and now I can prove it (again) to my wife. I'll look at the April article. I'll also look at the PPI list, which I'm sure will be very helpful.

And then don't you know it, Roger looks to be living in a house made of 928's a few miles from my house!! Talk about getting up to speed on this stuff fast...

Good timing! One thing I've noticed in the last few days, is that the cars on FleaBay seem to not be too impressive. I'm sure this changes regularly. I've also looked on Auto Trader, and there are some people/dealers quite proud of their cars, a number that looked interesting at prices I would expect for a decent car, and then some lower cost cars. My guess is there are always going to be cars priced quite high (everything's for sale, right?), but the right one will come along with patience.

Robert, post it here, you're gonna get our very varying opinions. Some will pay 70k for a perfect GTS. Some will pay 30k for a so-so GTS. Some will pay 30k for an excellent S4. Some will pay 3k for a great S4. Blue book means nothing.

Find the car you want. Have a VERY knowledgeable 928 person check it out. And like my friend Shane says .... "go on down the road".

LoL!!

If any of mine ever go for sale, they will do so at a premium. Just so you all know, I really don't intend to sell them, so if you see them at high prices listed on E-bay or Autotrader and such, it is because the wife pestered me into it.

Ed which would you rather buy?

low-mile car, cracked windshield, dented door, otherwise perfect interior and exterior and mechanically including brand new tbelt and front main seal; no leaks; perfect compression; second owner or:
less low-mile car, no obvious broken parts, but some oil leaks; excellent service records; obviously much more worn; several owners ...

at the same price?

Thanks for the pricing advice so far, guys. I recognize that there's no hard and fast rules on this. And clearly, I plan to buy the best example that I can afford. My hope was to find a 5 speed GT with under 80k miles for around $25k. Car would have to be well maintained and pass thorough PPI. My guess is that I may be looking at more like $30k for that. Would you generally agree?

GZILLA: I'm in the Seattle area too. Is there a shop you would recommend for a PPI? The shop I take my 911 to (John Walker's) specializes only in air-cooled Porsches...

Thanks again, guys!

This is not a snide reply. "It's worth what somebody is willing to pay for it." and "It depends" I say that in all seriousness b/c the market is thin, BUT 928s are a special item with a few of addicts one of which might travel halfway across the country to show up and steal the one you are looking at. A few dealers I won't mention inflate the prices and can afford to sit on a GTS for a year at $50K. A mint of any given MY will go for way over book unless the seller is in a hurry. Jim Bailey estimates this list is only a small fraction of the owners, and there are owners who maintain their sharks conscientiously not on this list , so to answer your question about pricing -- It depends. You really have to go with your gut or take someone (a complete stranger from here??) to inspect the car AND/or get a PPI. but you are also inspecting the owner and how he has maintained it. A lot of Pcars are advertised as "Porsche maintained" for these that may be a dis-service.

Good luck.

I won't go for a worn car, as these things take too much to refurb. I don't know that I'd go for the first one either.

If I do go this route, I will probably indeed end up going for a car with a premium assigned to it, assuming that's what it will take to get a car that has truly been cared for. I'll also take my time.

RDurff, check with chris's german auto (chris powell) who serviced my 944 for many years or if you can get him, Leif Johnson at autowerks northwest (he's ridiculously busy) or monty at redmond european or in tacoma, Robert larsson Porsche. All are very experienced in Porsche 928 work.

That's where experience with the cars comes in. The first car would take a windshield and door dent repair and you'd have a brand new car. the second will cost you 4 times the purchase price and still look old.
