The rebuild for mine was about $500 and they were willing to go as high as 80% in the process. They had one on the shelf for $900 IIRC. This was for the '83-89 variety.
I should note that they are about as professional a shop as it gets. Moreover, they are the folks that 928 International trusts. (Thanks again Jim!) I got a tour of their facility in Lake Havasu City, AZ...in a word, WOW! If you want the closest thing to a new (or better than new) transaxle, call them.

Jim Page took an early Ring & Pinion (2.75 ratio) from an early (78-79) installed into an S4 5-speed - this also allowed him to run an early LSD unit.
