Default April Excellence Issue: 87 S4 VS. 88 911 Carrera

Those of you that don't suscribe to Excellence-the April issue is a must have.
Several great articles including a 2500 mile drive in the original 211 mph Ruf Yellow Bird and a very well done comparo of two great Porsches.
The Title Fight: 87 928 S4 vs. 88 911 Carrera. Two Porsche owners and the author spend a full day behind the wheel of both cars in sunny New Mexico.
Catagories compared are:
styling, ergonomics, power, handling, Maintenance (oh,oh ), cost and finally fun factor in the twisties.
One wins by only a hair.
By the end the author is won over and wants to add a 928 to his Garage.
As an owner of both cars (78 911 SC turbo & modified 86 928S) the article is right on the money.
Check it out.

Having owned almost the identical cars myself ('87 S4 5sp and '89 Carrera) I'll definately have to see how their opinions match mine. For the record, the 911 was the cheaper to maintain while I owned it, but it had 60k less miles on it as well. But when it came time to sell one or the other, it was an easy choice to keep the 928.

You guys are killing me. I'm getting ready to go out of town for a couple of weeks and have not received my copy yet. I seem to get mine about a week after people on this forum start to discuss the new issue. Oh well, I guess it will be at home waiting for me when I get back home.

Remember, Excellence doesn't publish Jan, Mar & July.

They go Driving.

G'luck all.

I read my copy of Excellence last night (subscription), and when I finished the article comparing the 928S4 and the 911, I had deja vue. The summary was exactly the same as one I'd heard in ~1986!!

I was managing a technical development program at that time in which Porsche was a collaborator. I'd developed a good working relatinship with the head of advanced engine development - Hans Mezger (developer of the monster 917 racing engine). At lunch one day, I asked Hans and his close associate what "used" Porsche I should buy, as I'd never owned one. After a lot of discussion "auf Deutsche", (of which I understood little), Hans laughed and said "It depends". In further discussion, they said if I wanted to have a lot of fun driving short distances and twisty windy roads I should buy a 911 SC which is what Hans drove. IF I wanted to drive longer distances, enjoy the ride and drive, and be relaxed and refreshed upon arriving I should buy a 928 (the associate had a 928 S). The associate said "I can drive from here (Weissach) to my ski chalet in Switzerland 250 miles away in 2 hours or less, and arrive refreshed and ready to ski. IF Hans tried to follow me, he would be beaten to death and exhausted when we arrived". Hans smiled and said "He's right"!!!!
So - short fun trips in a 911. Long enjoyable relaxing trips in a 928. Just as the Excellence article concluded.
I've driven my 928's 5-700 miles to a race track on one day, then driven in DE's for the next 3 days, then home the 5th day on many occasions. I've never found anyone who drove a 911 to, at, and from the track from more than a couple of hundred miles away. (And - the 928 surprises a lot of "traditional" air cooled 911 drivers on the track!!!). The 996 twin turbo's are a different story!!

Just read it.....for an author that is clearly an old school 911 guy...he gave the 928 a semi-fair shake... Of course all the "things" that he likes about the 911, we would hate (no power, bad interior, uncomfortable..etc) He called it "nimble-quick" or something like that....

Does anyone know the owner of the 928?
