When trying to move the shift lever into park I get a resistance similar to a grinding in the shift lever (all other gear selections are fine)... the car generally doesnt go into park although it has a tendancey to work sometimes... when in park and with the P light illuminated the car will not start (usually)... so of course the only way to start it is in Neutral. For now I have been using the E-brake and gentley placing it in Park. I hope the description was good enough... its hard to describe.

have you looked at the linkage at the transmission, or pulled the console to check out the shifter ? You have something bent, or binding... If all gears are fine...but it won't go into Park...or if you do occasionally get it into Park, and the "P" is illuminated in your dash..., you shouldn't have to put it into neutral to "start" the car. Check for bent or binding linkage at the transmission, and the shifter.

It sounds like two unrelated problems.

On the hard to place in "Park" symtom, there's a piston (blocking valve) in the plate above the valve body that provides an interlock that keeps the car's operator from selecting Park while the cars in motion. That piston's hydraulic pressure is controlled by the governor. So it could be a stuck blocking valve piston or the governor that needs servicing. These are both servicable without removing the transmission from the car. The governor pressure can be monitored with a pressure gage as per the WSM.

On the "no start in Park" symtom, that would likely be the "starter locking and backup light switch" located on the outside of the transmission.

Hi, I would disonnnect the cable at the transaxle it sounds like you may have a cable starting to fray, othewrwise try adjusting the trans shifter with the WSM instructions, this is done with the shifter in the neutral position, Stan

I am a little confused. Can you clarify your answer to my question.
Are you saying with the engine off, from reverse to park you hear
a noise and engages park, and not from any other position.Can
you engage park from all postions with no nosie with the engine
not running.

I would safely lift the car with the rear wheels off the ground,
disconnect the shift cable (socket) from the shifter lever (ball)
on the transmission.

Do both test engaging all shift positions: P R N D 3 2,
park is engaged when the lever is moved to its rear most position,
To the Rear of the car. With the engine off to engage the parking lever
Inside the transmission, rotate With LSD one wheel.
With an open differential hold one Wheel then rotate the other; you should
only hear one click maybe two dependent on the position, of the gear





Have a Helper start the engine with his/ her,
foot on the brake pedal. From park move the lever two clicks
forward, reverse. Let the wheels turn then brake, move the lever
into park when the wheel stop turning.


To engage the parking lever inside the transmission, rotate
with LSD one wheel, with an open differential hold one
wheel and turn the other; you should only hear one click
maybe two or none dependent on the position of the gear.


If you have that Ratcheting sound, the problem is in the
transmission, if you don’t, it could be the shift cable, the shifter
lever mechanism, or the park /reverse lock out system.

I can no longer engage park, from Reverse to Park I get what could be described as a ratcheting sound and the dash lights indicate the car is still in reverse although the car is not in reverse.

That sound is not from the parking lock gear or parking pawl
in the transmission. Take the shifter plate and booth off
look for any obstructions, like a screw or others. If you
Don’t find anything in there; Disconnect the shifter cable from
the transmission and try it again. If you have the same problem
do the procedure I posted, it will isolate the transmission from
the rest of the system.

this is my project for today, but naturally I cant get the shifter plate out, I know about the levers and according to the WSM the levers should be visible when in the unlocked position, with the levers unlocked I still cant get the plate out.

You have to move the shift selector all the way forward to release the rear clips, then all the way back to release the back clips. That's because the slider plate goes is longer than the opening.

thanks I got the shifter plate out, and OF Course I cant find the problem, that would be to easy. I took the linkage off of the shifter mechanism and it worked fine. and in the process of being frustrated I slammed the door and my mirror fell off.

Ross.............there's lots of helpful advice on this thread but like most things 928 they require patience. Perhaps time to head for the beer fridge and have a re-look later.

BTW.........if the mirror fell off by slamming the door that perhaps thats indicative of the overall condition. A stem to stern walk around may be in order..............remember she's not as young as she used to be and requires some TLC.
