Ross: I sympathize. Some parts on these cars are reasonably priced. Most are expensive. For some of the more ridiculously priced factory parts we do know of workable, less expensive alternatives. In this case, I think the Big 3 are dependent on Porsche. It is possible to have cables made up, but you would need to take the cable out and find a shop and hope the end fittings are relatively standard. Even so, I think a long cable like this would be $100 if you could have it done. If you know a cable builder near Sarasota, have at it, or you could pay the freight from one of the Big 3 and have the car back on the road in a day. Keep us posted. Best wishes.

Problem solved... well for now... I made up a little sheath that allows the cable to fully retract but still maintain some strength took me all day to get it to work right though. While I was under there I noticed the cvc boot was ripped, atleast I caught it soon enough. I took the car out for a little spin awhile ago and while my brakes were feeling a little mushy they finally gave out had to limp my way home with the E-brake, Im assuming its the master cylinder, from what I see the big 3 dont sell a master cylinder rebuild kit although Pelican Parts does...

She is parked til I get the brakes sorted out. Time to drive the Cadillac

Looks like you're up for some mechanical work. The boot can be replaced if the joint is still good. Do it right - No split boot repair kit; clean and repack the joint and put on a stock boot - requires removing the axle, of course. Rebuilding/replacing the master can be a bit of a pain due to location. Some people have recently shown how to make an access window to get at the master much more easily. See this thread:

Be sure it is the master first, of course. Good luck. [EDIT - Stupid me. That's the CLUTCH master in the other thread! The brake master is up where it should be.]

Ross,
Good to hear you have come up with a temporary fix. My next suggestion was to use the thin sheet and roll it on a former (smaller diameter than the outisde diameter of the outer cover) like a cigarette paper and where the edges lapp over solder them together, in situ.

This could be done by pre-tinning the lap faces after you have formed the sheet metal cover and when it is place over the cable, it could be tightened up using some wire around the outside diameter and winding it tight with a pair of pliers. A couple or more of these wire tighteners would probably do the job. When it is tight on the outer coverof the cable, solder the lap faces together between the wire holders and then remove the wire and solder up the missed sections.

This could possibly be a more permanent repair until you can replace of have a cable made.

I believe this should fit through the guide hole.
