DR's X-pipe leads to new clutch!
FIrst off, there is no problem with DR's AWESOME x-pipe! It is a fabulous piece of metal-craft. My problem results in it creating too much HP/Torque.
I knew my clutch was marginal and that it would probably have to be replaced before the SC install, but then yesterday the roads were clear enough for me to take the GT out for a quick 15 minute spin with the new x-pipe. Before this, I had only ran in in my driveway and once up and back the street by my house. I cannot tell you how happy I am with this pipe. It sounds truly amazing, and for me, there is a serious boost in HP.
So I was driving around my neighborhood test track (we all have one, right? ) when I decided to really get on it. That's when I noticed if I shift from 3rd to 4th pretty hard the clutch slips and the RPMs stay at about 5k instead of dropping down to 4k until I let up on the gas just a bit, then as soon as it grabs I take off like a rocket! But we all know this won't last long.
So now I get to replace the clutch.
Funny thing is that the clutch was replaced at 63K. Car now has 122k. If all I can expect is 60k mi out of a clutch, then I think I should look at Carl's racing clutch with the replaceable friction.
Thanks DR... this is all "your fault"! You're the best!

Hi Andrew,
>Thanks DR... this is all "your fault"!
Sorry about that :-)
> You're the best!
Thanks!!!
BTW, I would recommend a genuine Porsche clutch with a GTS pressure plate (this is what I just put in my GT last month)..and you should be ready for years of trouble free BURNOUTS !!!

I have one with a GTS PP and one with a stock GT PP. A very noticable difference in the GTS PP.

I share your enthusiasum for changing out the clutch......I have one on my bench that I got from DR....prolly goes in this winter....I just don't know if the old one is really shot yet.....you can spin any clutch if you apply enough HP to it.......if you know what I mean.....
With the grunt Gretch is putting out, I find I need to let her get a good grip on the clutch before we start turning the sneakers, no matter what gear she is in......but once she is "gripped", I see no slipping......'course I havent tried a power shift to 4th in a while.....
Believe me, you will change your driving habits once you have in excess of (even) 400 hp available..... (right Bill?)
In your case Andrew, it does sound like the clutch was marginal to begin with......do a write up with pictures.....I will also....

Matt,
>Andrew, just convert it to dual disk.
That is pretty ironic coming from a guy with this in his tag line ...

As I recall Louie had to source a different flywheel for this change?

Andrew, when we dropped in the low-mile engine into my 170k S4 5spd which was yielding 299/299 to the rear wheels, we were SHOCKED at the clutch disk. It was, after I had driven the car 50k miles, almost new. I think that driving style can make a big difference in clutch longevity, and also I believe the state of your gearbox will determine clutch wear to a large extent. Having now driven non-S4's the past year+, it was like a dream getting to drive my 5spd S4 again. I thought the 86 gearbox was smooth (which it is), but the S4 unit really feels like it was designed and made just for me. Shifts are quick and smooth. When I bought the S4 now 6 years ago, I remember having clutch slippage a few times and being very unimpressed with the car's slow shifts. Well, I think I've grown to understand the box and shifting a lot better.
