Lightbulb An idea for DR's modular x-pipe system..

Been thinking about DR's new x-pipe system, and had an idea I wanted to run by the gang..

What if....instead of the cats - you used 'cherry bomb' type mufflers where the cats plug in, and then do a nice bend and have the exhaust exit on each side just in front of the rear wheels...(kinda 'retro') I guess.

My thought is it would be simple and more free-flowing.

I have always wondered, tho - what is the effect on the rear tires on cars that have the exhaust exit at this point?

Your input is welcomed!

Most cars that have side exhaust can recess the exhaust up into the body before the exit. There isn't much room for that on a 928.

My thought exactly.....first bump in the road would rip the exhaust off the car.....

Yea..I just went and looked - NO clearance available....oh well - it was a thought. NEVERMIND.

I guess the sleep depravation from dealing with 2-kids with stomach flu over the last few days has taken its toll!

Mark,
When I read the title of your thread, I thought, "Maybe he wants to turn the DR X-over into a bong or a crack pipe!?" Not meant to be a reflection on you, just my current mental state.

But I like your cherry bomb idea. I'm gonna try it with the rear muffler in place, then if I want, I might try it with an RMB too. But most say that'll be too loud, so a couple of cherry bombs might just be the ticket!

Side pipes have been done on a 928 before...

Pictures were posted here on the Rennlist.

Looks kind of "Hot Wheels", but it's not a bad idea.

and isn't there something on the law books that the pipe must exit after the passenger cabin?

IIRC - these were the classic old 'vette'-type, that exited behind the front wheels, and ran down the rocker panel. (I think I still have a burn scar from getting out of a buddy's car that had 'em!)

Did you hear my car at Frenzy? That was a single 3" with 4x9 Magnaflow. I think two 4" round Magnaflows would sound awesome behind the X. That was actually my orginal plan, but I was short on money so I have the old Y-pipe and a single.

Hi Mark,

Actually that is a good idea.

I just checked, MagnaFlow and Borla have a round Stainless Steel Race Muffler that is the correct lenght and all you need to do is change the "necks" to a 2.5" inlet/outlet and they would be a direct replacement without any other mods to our Modular Crossover or your existing exhaust!

.. and as discussed on another thread, if you have some nice side aero panels you could do the side exhaust with no problems.. Yes they would be low, but not as low as the aero side panels would need to be. PLUS there are plenty of "flat" oval" exhaust piping available just like what is used on the Nascar racers... See photo below to give you an idea as to what I mean...

oooohhhh...where would one get some of that.
It would beat placing a 3.5 inch tube in a vice...or precisely crushing it with my foot to flatten it out!

I have always wondered how a split dual exhaust would sound (right exhaust, left exhaust ala right speaker left speaker). I know that low frequencies are not stereophonically perceptible, but I wonder if the higher freqs would help the exhause sound like THX theater surround if we had true split exhaust.

No one has split the exhaust in this fashion because???? location of the gas tank?

I also just checked Burns and they have the exact racing muffler that wil fit with no mods at all ..

http://www.burnsstainless.com/Ultral...temuffler.html

see part # SM-250-350-12

Tony,

Oval tubing is very common these days due to the popularity of its use in NASCAR. You can get it at Burns (the most expensive) or many other places. Google "Oval Exhaust tubing" and you will find plenty.

I just looked under my GT and you come come out with a nice 90 degree bend oval just under the lower control arm (just rearward of the Lower control arm mount) and exit right out in front of the rear tire. Easy as pie and due to the location close to the tire it is very doubtful it would ever hit any thing. The only way that could happen is if you had already hit something low enough that would hit your front spoiler, sway bar mount, etc. anyway..

Mark, get the tools out and "GIT R DONE" !!
