It would be easy on the really early cars. Put a gel cell in the spare tire well and yank the battery box.

Splitting it this way and doing side exit exhaust (in front of the rear tires)would move it MUCH farther away from the gas tank.

We can get all the oval pipe you need and even in bends to your specification from Dr. Gas at a good price.

Dave, can we help? I don't know if you would sell enough to make it worthwhile but I'm willing to assist...

Thanks, I might take you up on that. I will do some measuring and see which way is the best to approach it. I will say anything I do would have to be made of stainless to match our Modular Crossover as it wouldn't make any sense to me to do it any other way. This unfortunately excludes the DR Gas items, unless you can get them to do some custom 304 stainless ovals for me. From quick calculations on my GT (which is on the lift behind me) all the items I would need are readily available from Burns Stainless which I can get good deals on.

Still due to the cost of that specific special muffler they make (retail for $200 each) a side exit dual system that mates directly to our Modular Crossover would realistically cost approx $700+ in 304 Stainless.

Also since those are Racing Mufflers and there would be no cats it is gonna be VERY LOUD.

I could also mod the Stainless Magnaflow mufflers which I can get a lot cheaper, but they will be LOUD also.

Oh, did I say this system will be loud?

Any who, if anyone is game for such a system it would be pretty easy to put together in a short time, but would be done on a custom onesy, twosy type production.

A dual side exit exhaust like this really would be fun to do on a 928, any interested parties send me an e-mail or give me a call if you want to discuss further.

Yep - I had never ever thought about side exhaust before. I had only thought about well separated rear exhaust and the orchestral sound it might produce. Side exhaust, wow, we are talking like front & center orchestra seating.

Now If I recall, there was a fellow at SITM a couple of years ago that had a 928 with good a old fashioned Corvette style dual side exhaust system. I didn't have the chance to hear it in full dolby stereo however. Next time I remove my RMB, I might experimuhnt just to see how it might sound, then quickly put my real exhaust back on.

I am all ears if anyone else that happens to be more motivated. Please share your findings!

Dave,
How would you exit the side pipes? Would you have to cut panels?

hi Ernest,

>How would you exit the side pipes?

They would exit with an oval outlet just in front of the rear tire.

>Would you have to cut panels?

NO, not any of the factory panels. If someone had some aftermarket aero side skirts then yes I would want to have an exit similar to the Viper GTS/R Photo I posted earlier!

Come to think of it I have a pair of the Jaqumond side panels lying around somewhere....and they already have holes there that were intended for rear brake ducts... hmmmmm

Mark Silver, how soon can you be up here!! :-)

The side skirts I have here look like this... a liitle trimming of that hole and an oval would fit nicely!!

Yes they do including the special mufflers needed, as I said earlier in above post ..

"From quick calculations on my GT (which is on the lift behind me) all the items I would need are readily available from Burns Stainless which I can get good deals on."

Of course it could also easily be done "down and dirty" with literally some cherry bombs and some mild steel stuff for a lot less.. but I will leave that for someone else.

DJB,

BTW, if you are nearby I would be interested in a joint project with you on a system like this on your 928.

What if....instead of the cats - you used 'cherry bomb' type mufflers where the cats plug in, and then do a nice bend and have the exhaust exit on each side just in front of the rear wheels...(kinda 'retro') I guess.

My thought is it would be simple and more free-flowing.

I have always wondered, tho - what is the effect on the rear tires on cars that have the exhaust exit at this point?

Your input is welcomed!
My experience is that the cherry bombs, if you mean glasspacks, are NOT more free flowing than cats. They have a big hole down the middle, of course, but they have perforations that divert air into the glass area and that disturbs flow more than the honeycomb, almost laminar, architecture inside the stock cat and most aftermarket cats. Also, I found the sound of the glasspacks kind of odd. I did some Mr. Dyno street runs that showed my car was slower off the line with the cherry bombs. I pulled them and went back to stock cats.
