Default Air pump removal

Hi, my air pump is a bit noisy & I want to remove it for overhaul. Am i correct in assuming that it is bolted to the block by 3 bolts through the rear of the pump? And that this means that the aircon unit and possibly the exhaust heat shields have to come of so I can remove the air pump? Is this correct? Is there another way to pull the pump apart without taking it of the block.?

Maddox, I just helped a friend replace his air pump on an 89 and we didn't have to remove the air con compressor. He did have the radiator and fan/shroud out to do a belt and water pump change though. I think the fans and shroud alone would give enough access.

Only two ways to remove the S4/GT/GTS air pump. Earlier cars may be the same?

1. Remove the timing belt tensioner, as part of a timing belt replacement procedure.
2. Dismount the A/C compressor from it's engine mount being careful not to stress the A/C hoses with the A/C fully pressurized.

The air pump hose must be connected at the pump in the correct orientation before the install.

Thanks guys - I have just rebulit the tensioner and refitted it, with T belt etc(damn). Still, it will probably be easier to remove those bits than mess around with the compressor & hoses.

Maddox..........removed my air pump not to long ago. I did not remove the t/b tentioner or the fans or shrouds but did slacken the a/c compresor bolts to move it out the way. The bolts on my a/p were very tight so watch out where your knuckles etc are going to go when that wrench slips................my right thumb nail is just growing back.

Hi all, thanks for the differing views on removing the air pump.My one is now in pieces except for that pressed on bushing on the end. I have attempted it and so has my mechanic, it may need to be pressed off by some heavy duty machinery.

I have noticed that the central roller bearings have been spotwelded into place.
Does anyone know when this was first done on the 928? The dismantling procedure I have does not mention spot welds when removing the bearings.

Also, I have read some other posts on the topic relating to the complete removal of the air pump - i.e. not replacing it. In this case what does
one do with the unsightly gap in the middle of the tensioner bracket?
Has anyone got photos of their engine bay with the air pump permanently removed?
