You know, I'm starting to share this view too (no pun intended). I would really like to install an LED strip akin to what the 993's were running, but I suspect that making a custom install that looks clean enough would be a ton of work - any ideas?

I think there is room inside the hatch if you care to cut into it. Also I think you could buy one of the strip-of-led products like folks have been using for their gauge illumination and make something thin that would sit unobtrusively just aft of the headliner section on the hatch. I like that idea better, no cutting.

I'm currently working on just such a mod. I want to intall the 3rd brake light on the headliner, to mate up against the top 2" of the rear window. It will be the width of the opening between the rear sunvisors and eliminate the obstruction created by the current 3rd brake light. My problem is the blacked out area of the window where the current 3rd brake light mounts is fused to the glass. I've tried everything I can think of, paint remover, alcohol, MEK, acetone, etc. to get it off, nothing has touched it. My next step is to find a OB rear window glass. Any suggestions on how to get the black coating off the glass would be greatly appreciated.

Good question, Jim. I have no clue, so I'd probably ask someone at an auto glass shop.

Can you identify where in this picture the wire you are referring to might be?

Anyone else have any ideas as to which wire in these pictures might be for the brakelights?

How about the Jacquemond/Strosek spoiler that goes at the top of the hatch?

Somebody was selling a fiberglass GTS spolier copy with an LED third light on ebay a while ago.

Sorry man... I was assuming that your '85 would have the wires already. As H-P pointed out, they started mandating them in 86 so it would seem that if you want one you'll have to pull the wires too. IIRC the wires that feed from the body to the hatch pass through the interior quarter panel on the passenger side, near the seatbelt. You would have to loosen up at least the front edge of that panel to get to it if you want to run wires along the same path.

Glack,
You will need to pull the wires to the hatch as Dave says - how will you work around the bulb monitor issue? On my GTS the high stop lamp is just in parallel to the Right stop lamp...? try that first...

Another option is to use an additional relay to drive the new brake light with its coil connections coming from the right brake light feed.... the coil only takes <200mA - so probably within the tolerance of the brake light current monitoring... if not feed it directly from the stop light switch before it goes to the bulb monitor.

You'd want the relay fed from an X-Bus or 30 Bus (always on 12v bus) supply so the brake lights will always operate together (they use X-Bus). You could probably do this at the back of the car or at the Central Electric panel.

Alan
