Annual Maintenance Costs on a GT - 10 Year documented proof!
I was bored last week so I decided to catalog all of the maintenance receipts that came with my GT. I thought I had them back to original, but sadly I don't . However I do have them for the past 10 years (from 25,000 miles). All told (including my MM replacement), just over $29k has been spent on my GT for various ailments. Interestingly, a lot of items have been replaced that probably did not need replacing like the in-tank fuel pump, and maybe one of the steering racks? Still, at dealer prices that's about $3k per year. If you do the work yourself you can probably halve it or better.
Anyway, I've attached the file for your reading pleasure. I broke out the labor and parts when it was broken out on the work order, but some of the early one's just had a lump number. Interesting stuff.

You should see the "professional" job CC did. I'll get a pic and post it tonight/tomorrow. Not to mention all the other crap he had to pay for as a result of them re-installing the seat poorly. Oh well, seems to be fixed now.

Yours was expensive .....Since 1992, I have put 90,000 miles on Gretch and spent a total of $18,000 on her......and most of that has been for "bling". This has been one of the most reliable cars I hav ever had.........for the mileage. She has had two water pumps, two clutches and three timing belts..........about what I would expect from a super car, over 15 years and 90,000 miles.

Agreed, it's a bit rich, but it appears that the PO was unwilling to try and fix his issues. I have always budgeted about $2k per year (including bling). Doing your own maintenance really helps cut the price = lots-o-bling.
So Gretch, did that $18k include the SC? Just curious.

Wow, that guy sure liked his AC to be cold, that showed up on every other service.
Also, why did he keep sticking things beneath his seat and breaking wires?
But my most favorite of all is the oil leak from the REAR of the car! Must be a former 911 owner.
Seriously, that list looked like hell. 90% of it was 928 electrical gremlins. Good luck with that car, Andrew.

When I got the car the AC did not blow cold. So when I was doing the MM replacement I pulled the heater valve, and sure enought, although it appeared to be functioning, hot water still flowed through it. I'll bet dollars to donuts that was the problem all along - because it sure blows cold now. I think the best one to have happened is the LH Brain RR. Hopefully that bullet has been dogged.

Thanks for sharing,
interesting to see the steering rack twice on the list with only 4 Years between.
Is the rebuilt ones known to be week?
Cheers/Peter

I think it was Mark from Florida who said he got a rebuilt unit from Autozone for $200-$300 bucks. That isn't all that spectacular, but what is is that it comes with a LIFETIME WARRANTY! The 928 racks are somewhat prone to leaking. I think it's the design that leads to failure more than anything else.

The P.O. records that came with my car indicate that it went to the Porsche dealership for everything. When I say everything, I mean everything...except gas.
Porsche did the oil changes, new tires, batteries, wiper blades, etc. One that I like is "leather shift boot has small gouge....replace shift boot"
That's the kind of second hand car that you want, but the repair/maintenance bills make it look like a very expensive car to repair & maintain.
Aside from the necessary stuff like oil changes, t-belt replacement, etc. there were 4 batteries that were replaced within a 3 year period. It made me nervous until I realized that the car had sat locked, for long periods of time...particularly during winter. Instead of having the battery charged, off it went to the Porsche dealership for a new battery (sometimes on the back of a rollback). So there were numerous things done that should have/could have been avoided. How does $175/per for v-rated Comp T/A's sound?
Since my ownership, the car has seen next to nothing in outside repair bills, aside from A/C service after I replaced both e-valves & all o-rings. I say outside, since I do whatever I can myself (as my tools, equipment & knowhow will allow). But even considering 'in-house' repairs & maintenance, it hasn't been bad at all. Nylon shift 'cup', Y-connector....little things like that.
In the 'cost-to-maintain-and-own' category, I don't consider improvements like shock/spring setups, exhaust mods, etc. The sky's the limit on that stuff.
T-belt replacement & airbag sensor replacement will soon add to the tally, but in no way will that make this an expensive car to own/maintain....in it's category.
I guess I've been lucky with only having the expected issues with a '91 GT (knockonwood); and would be seeing considerably more 'outside' repairs if it weren't for the unbeatable resources that come from this list. Also, this isn't an everyday driver, so that helps, of course.
So in my case, using the p.o.'s records as a barometer is misleading to say the least.
This car's been great to me, and that has solidified my bond (my wife's '00 Honda Odyssey was on it's 3rd transmission before it hit 100k....no bond there).

Didn't mean it to be a barometer per se... just an example of what it COULD cost if you went to the dealer. I'm not a "dealer-serviced" kind of guy, so, I'll just do it myself and pocket the profit.

Andrew, by 'barometer' I wasn't really referring to your method of figuring costs or your post as being inexact, or wrong by any means....it's your (interesting) post, and your method....I was really adding to the topic w/an example of the other extreme (my p.o.'s costs)

$3k a year for dealer service seems about right....far less now that you do your own work! I made a similar file for my 928 in excel...1.5 years owned....$12.6K! But that's because of the near total rebuild just before I bought the car $11.5K! So $1100 for a year isn't bad at all!
