This is aweful. i am sorry to hear about it. I advise you to replace the heads. You cannot use the 87-88 as they do not have the temp sensor port, and are actually inferior to the 89+ heads. Porsche realized an issue with cracking heads on their 32V engines and upgraded the design. I would recommend you going for new 90+ heads which would spare you the peace of mind, and the position optimized temp sensors. Welding thought strong, can never match cast.

As I recall he was running a modified FAST. I am very curious what the highest boost level ran and the duration it was ran was.

I think the head can be changed wiyhout the engine having to come out.
What kind of supercharger and how much boost where you running?

If you weld the head while it is on the engine, and heat fail the head gasket and start the engine and get some heat in it, you can have a failure taht will fill the cylinder with coolant and cause a massive failure.
And without knowing the total crack geometry, you may find that it runs through areas that are crucial to engine function....
I have yet to see an engine head crack on a 85 or later engine due to overheat and we have seen alot of overheats! Headgaskets always fail first on overheats, followed by warpng the bores and then warping the heads..
