Default Video of 1-1/2 laps of Thunderhill

Here's some in-car video from last Sat. at Thunderhill. I was went with the NCRC DE group and spent a couple beautiful days at the track. A couple of nicely prepared older black 911's were running at about the same speed as me the whole weekend. This video was from the time trial session when I caught up to one of them. I eventually had to back off because there was a yellow flag for a car off the road at Turn 2. Traffic got in the way and I could never catch up again.

It's not the most exciting video in the world, but if you're bored at work and want to kill some time before your Thanksgiving weekend, come with me for a ride around T-hill.

Black 911 @ T-hill (40 MB)

For you gearing freaks, I have the rare 2.64 ring & pinion. You can hear me banging the rev limiter at the end of the front straight at ~120. The 2.64 is perfect for my car at T-hill.

Yet another great clip Dennis, thanks for posting. You seem to be a tad more 'busy' than usual and you're turning in early. Are you changing your driving style?

Cheers,
Pierre.

Thanks all.

Pierre - Yeah, I'm trying to be more aggressive on corner entry. I'm carrying more speed in and trying to maintain it through mid-corner. I feel sometimes like a late apex requires me to kill too much entry speed to create the sharper angle at turn-in and I never get the speed back. I'm trying to keep as much momentum as possible.

Same technique that most of the "new school" drivers do in European racing, keep the high speed as long as you can and brake hard all the way to the apex - if done right it gives a higher average speed since your speed when clipping the apex should be the same as in old school driving.. Very hard to get it right though, especially without ABS..

Nice vid Dennis. Why are you so far to the inside in #2? With that car and locker diff I would think staying about 3/4 to half way out would be faster on turn in. Start then coming down towards the apex gradually through the turn. You should get a lot less push, carry more speed, and you should be able to pick up the throttle sooner.

I think I know what you mean. I've taken up 250 superkarts a few months ago and discovered I was way slow. This really troubled me 'cause I'm usually much quicker than my peers thanks to my bike racing experience. With karts the physics are all f@cked up. You hurtle in deep, dab the brakes, pitch it way late, catch a small slide with a bit of opposite lock and hover on the knife edge of traction as you feed the power on.

I believe there is a connection with cars and kart racing (all the great drivers started in karts). I've had a small taste a few weeks ago at driving a friend's 500hp 944 turbo like a 250 kart and it felt really good. The lap times proved that, but I need more laps to practice it to perfection. I would like to try going even deeper, braking later, pitching the bastard to scrub off speed and throttle on earlier to maintain momentum and keep mid-corner speed.

Maybe that's an option you should try, but there's no lesson here bud, just sharing some thoughts...

Cheers,
Pierre.

I was going to note the same thing. acually, having the same car iits pretty easy to compare what im doing. i do LOVE the 2.64 at t-hill from your video. would come in handy in a few places! (vs my 2.2) but, its easy to make up some of it by redlining to turn 2 and redlining to turn 8 (kink) . basically, for the Holbert car with the 2.2, i can touch 4th down the main straight, blip for 3rd at turn 1, and then redline in 3rd to turn 2. then, i stay in 3rd for the entire rest of the lap until a quick 4th gear hit to turn 10 and up to turn 13. (of course 2nd at 11/12 area .

I think your shifts are good, but you spend way too much time making them work. i would threashold brake deeper, and do what ive been doing, shift in the neutral area of the turn. all your exits are solid, and the car is running fast. going by my visual points, i would be running up on the 911 in the entry areas of the turns. Just a thought, it may work for you, as it does for me.

what kind of times were you turning without the "hill"? I think you said you were doing 2:06s last time with the hill, so, 2:02-2:03?

good video! car sounded good too!
