Put the belt roughly in place, but not over the cam sprockets. Then install the tensioner arm. Then run the belt properly. If you pull the tensioner bolt almost all the way out, then push the tensioner arm into the tensioner you'll have plenty of room.

Well, looks like it worked. I don't understand why the driver's cam won't line up, however. So I put both cams off the same amount and I'm hoping when I put tension on, it'll pull things into line.

Nope, didn't work. Passenger side is still off by the distance from the mark to the edge of the tooth to its right.

I just put mine on. The driver's side is exactly on the mark and the passenger side is about 1/3 tooth moved. I assumed it was OK....

So with the belt tensioned properly and the engine turned by hand a few times the passenger side is off by a half tooth? or is it a whole tooth?

It should be fine. The engine with expand and change it a little anyway. Is it advanced or retarded? retarded would make sense to compensate for the expansion, but advanced would make sense to compensate for belt stretch.

Mine were 1/4 or 1/3 tooth off but I forget which way. I have Porken's adjustable cam sprocket kit now so I can't check.

I'll try and get a picture of it, before and after hand-turning.

Which way would be advanced and which would be retarded?

Advanced would be the mark forward in it's direction of travel toward the WP and driver's cam. So if you're standing in front of the car with the crank and driver's cam lined up, the passenger's cam sprocket mark would be to the right of it's indicator.

Make sure you monitor the belt tension the first time you hand turn it over. It will push all the slack back to the tensioner and passenger cam which can jump a few teeth.

Well, all turned okay, no teeth jumped or anything. Thanks for the advice all!

Now I move on to finding where I put the cover bolts.

Thanks for the answer. I will sleep well now I don't know very well where is advance and where is retardation, but the mark on the spocket is about 1/3 tooth to the left of the mark on the cam housing. I thought it would be allright

I have had this happen too, seems to occur when changing from very high torque settings to low. If I change the setting in this way I always test for a click before using.
