Alternator upgrade to Delco?!
Anyone tried upgrading to the CS-130? Fits ok?
Will the CS-130 "Iceberg" Alt fit? (Larger rear housing). I'm tired of the Bosch dying after few years. The Delco is 105 or 140 amps. Cheaper and runs cooler.

John, your installing the CS-130? No mods to the alternator? What GM vehicle did it come of? Did you get the "PAINLESS" wire conversion pigtail P/N 307707? Needed to connect to the idiot light. PICS please..............

FWIW I use the Delco CS144 in my 80 928 with the Chevy LT1. Its the 140 Amp version. No issues at all with the 928 electrical system.
It failed once about 3 years ago on a Sunday. Took it to Pep Boys and got a replacement, no hassles or questions. Other than that, it works great.

Its been several years since I hooked it up. If I remember correctly there's 3 wires.
One small gauge(18 or 16 maybe) wire is used in the GM connector. It goes to the GM computer. I think the Porsche system may have used the same wire.
One heavier gauge wire(14 or 12?) went from the alternator output to the Porsche connector on the passenger side fender. From there it goes to the voltmeter in the dash. A wiring diagram will show the route and color of this wire. .
From the same alternator output connection a heavy gauge wire, 6, 4 or 2( memory fades here) goes to the starter.

Of course a bad connection to and from the dash will do the same thing.

I haven't used the CS-144 on a stock 928 set up. I'm not even sure if there is a source for a pulley. But I do know the CS-144 will work with the 928 electrical system.
There are numerous sources for CS-130 and CS-144 AC Delco and other aftermarket alternators.
These links are not Porsche specific but they may help.

We need somebody with a passing familiarity with electrons, here. Perhaps Wally might chime in.
What I think I've discovered so far is that the 928 uses the classic 3 wire alternator. This being the Delco CS-130 type, if we are looking to swap in a higher capacity, North American unit without changing the wiring.
a) the regulator is activated by the ignition/warning light wire,
b) the sense wire, connected directly to the battery bus
c) the heavy wire runs to the starter.
Aside from the minor mechanical issue of mounting it in the location of the old AIR pump, does anyone see any problem with my wiring hook-up analysis?
