Moderator or no Moderator...that was one of the most stupid comments I have very seen posted in my history of Rennlist...*giving you the crown*....Pulling to the side of the road to utilize a phone is what any police officer would tell you to do....you are focused on what you are doing...and not worry about talking on the phone and driving...What an Idiot...obviuosly brains are not a requirement to be Super...let alone a moderator...

This is the thing that scares me the most, you can be doing every thing right and out of no where you can be blind sided by an event. ....... ..the guy that runs the red light......the truck that swerves.....and like i read in our lcoal paper the other day, the rear dual wheel axle on a semi truck coming off and striking he car/driver in the on coming lane.

Somethings you cant prevent. Thats where luck, your guardian angel, faith, or pick your own reasons, comes to play.

If he had stopped to use a pay phone it would not have been on the road side. There is a partial truth here. The irony is, in this case, calling on the cell phone while driving would have been safer.

I would have preferred a story with 2 survivors. But the fact that there were not 2 decedents... amazing!

Lesson for all as stated before... roadside for emergencies only. Turn off the road if at all possible.

Brett, and Tony, let's make one thing clear - being a moderator does not preclude me from having an opinion.

I'm very glad that he escaped this ordeal relatively unscathed, but it is my opinion that his actions led directly to the death of that truck driver. It's just plain foolhardy to pull off onto the side of a high speed thoroughfare for any reason other than an emergency.

Put that in your collective pipes and smoke it.

I had a situation 10 years ago in a stock 87 Red S4 on a "first date" on a rainy Minnesota night. While driving about 30 MPH at night on a shaved road (that's where they take a few inches of Ashpalt off to resurface), the car exploded in front of me as if I hit an invisible concrete wall head on. Both front fenders buckled, the window was broke out, the engine still running was squeeling loudly, I hit the steering wheel hard (I don't think I was wearing a seat belt), but was generally unharmed other than a cut... my date was unharmed but shaken. What happened was that as they shave the streets around the manholes, they stick out and this particular one was a few inches high... enough to catch a frame member of the car. The engine block cracked, the front suspension was ripped out, the torque tube took out the transaxle... etc. The City of Minneapolis paid Allstate for the car who paid me a fair price, so all was OK. About a year later I get a call from a guy who was really pissed off... he paid $6500 for the car from a junk yard not realizing all that was wrong with the car till after he got it home. I told him that essentially the seats are OK, the rest of the car is junk... good luck!

First off, Im glad to hear that Gary is generally alright.

Secondly, I dont believe (based on what Ive read) that the actions of the truck driver are justified. Obviously there is no reason why he shouldnt have been paying attention to the road, especially going at that speed. The whole situation is simply unfortunate and I dont think it is fair for anyone to say that if given with different circumstances the accient could/should/would have been prevented. I honestly believe that when its your time to go it is unpreventable...

One of the reasons the car was so expensive. They were just as aware of safety as they were performance. No doubt about it, your chances of surviving a crash are a hell of a lot better in this car.

Congrats to Gary for being able to walk away from this one.

Randy, to say that Gary's actions is stretching it a bit I think. Who is to say the truck would not have still exited the freeway and struck a tree. Maybe he fell asleep. Maybe he still would have died and maybe he wouldn't have. I figure it was in the stars and was meant to be. Terrible in any event.

Unless it's a highway, in which case he would be obliged to tell you to exit the highway unless there is an emergency such that you *can't* do so. That's one of those traffic laws that is there for a very good reason.

For the record IMHO Gary's ations have nothing to do with the death of this truckdriver. Randy I understand your point brother but have a heart, if I spill hot coffee onto my crotch, the fault lies not with the seat designer or the coffee company. If I drive off the road in a massive load of steel and freight, I should expect to find little children playing there, scool crossing guards doing their thing; families having coffee, road workers painting lines, officers pulled over with speeders, deer and small animals wandering, and YES. A PORSCHE 928 PULLED OVER.

I really can't stand this pseudo-nuevo-American idea that it's anybody's fault but the do-er.

Just guessing but it sounds like the truck driver may have been driving intoxicated. People under the influence tend to steer into whatever they are looking at. Makes sense that saw the car and was staring at it and didn't realize he was steering into it. What are the odds that he would exit the road at that particular spot had he fell asleep or otherwise.
