Default Proper way to store tires/wheels

I have TOO many tire/wheel sets...5 or 6 sets NOT on the cars.

Is there a "proper" way to store them - to prevent dry rot or flat spotting?

Dark cool place away from running electric motors.
I'd say keep them from freezing, but that shouldn't be to much of a problem in Fl.

Thanks, John....what's with electric motors???

Also - should they be FLAT or stored standing up? (they're always standing up on racks at the tire stores...)

Electric motor produces ozone, bad for rubber.
The best is to hang them. I usually lay them two high on their side.

I built a tire rack just like the ones you see in the garages. So far it’s been working fine. If the tires are off the car I wouldn’t worry too much about the way they are stored. They will not flat spot no matter how you store them.

I hope this helps.

Mark,
if you're going to stack them you may want to put the plastic wheel rings between each one to avoid scratching them

Lots of good info in addition to tire storage.

Makes little difference in about four years tires are dead ! Rubber is not particularly stable and it just simply goes away. Tires are black as an attempt to block sunlight UV which breaks down rubber. We just "sold" a bunch of used tires it cost us about $2 each to get them hauled away. Included in that was a set of 4 brand new Goodyear racing slicks which I bought new maybe ten years ago they were toast ! even thought they had never been mounted to a rim. Tire Rack admits that some of the close out specials are tires whose time is going to expire to expire in a year or so !

Huuumm, I never seem to have any rubber left on the tires at the end of the season. Never thought about storing them. Things that make you go huuummmm.
