When I mentioned that my car smelled like gas, I got a lot of warnings about fuel lines and fittings. If the smell is getting into the car, leaking fuel sounds like a possibility. I was told to check the sender access panel under the rear carpet to the right of the spare tire, and the fittings by the fuel pump and filter by the tank. I assume your mechanic checked all the fuel lines under the hood.

If you can get away with no cat, I'd recommend doing it. An X-pipe would be a sound and HP enhancement, and if you need to you can run cats with one. I can't really say much about quieting down a car since mine is quite loud with just a 3" straight through Magnaflow.

Matt,

Point taken and i will check the sender area and fuel lines and pump and all. Note that there is no smell except when the car is running. That is why i have been assuming that is is emissions related. i will check the fuel lines and components as you suggested though.

Sincerely,
Khaled

Thanks for the comments but my car looks a little different now with the turbo twist wheels and the fat PS2 tyres...........I have to update my avtar.

The MAF is only part of the whole system but as mentioned considering the age and mileage its proably time for a rebuilt unit. As I've posted before I love the sound of my exhaust system with stock headers, the Motorsport X, GT resonators and a RMB. My wife is now liking it! Each to there own though
