The 1977 308 is one of the best versions. In 1979/80 they changed to FI , and the cams were reworked to meet emission limits. The final versions with the quad cam, 4VPC and Bosch FI are pretty good, but the 77 is a good one for performance on carbs. some came with fiberglass bodies as well. Also, the 928GT is the best of the breed for performance (GTS would be okay too).
I have the Mondial, which is the 4 seat cousin of the 308. the Mondial has cab-forward seating, and higher numerical gear, along with the 328 brakes. I like it better than the 308 for that reason. It's a poor comparison in general, because the cars are very different driving style. I drive the Ferrari like a go-cart. Whip the steering wheel around and rev the p!ss out of it. The Ferrari V8 likes a lot of RPM, and sounds amazing! Gated shifting requires some getting used to, and the clutch is heavy.
The 928GT, although intended as a performance touring car, just can't get the same sport feel as the 308/Mondial. The ride in the 928 is lumbersome compared to the Ferrari. The gobs of torque make shifting an after-thought in the 928, whereas in the 308 you need to keep it in the power band.
The Ferrari is a real attention getter. BTW, the best value in Ferraris is the Mondial, next would be the 308GT4, which I think is cute, and then the 308GTB. I've had many people grab their cell phone camera and snap a photo of my Ferrari while I drive by. No one has ever done that in the 928. Now, when I drive the Lamborghini - some guys will drive off the road to get a better look, hahahaha!
(no offence Jim, but how did you fit in a 308? They had to butcher the one in Magnum PI for Selleck, note; you hardly ever see him get in or out completely)

I don't think it was a very fair comparison. They should have had a 78 or 79 928 to compare.
What's the old saying about making scrambled eggs when you planned for over-easy?
DocMirror's comments are spot-on. The 308 was a hoot to drive and if the owner is to be believed (and I see no reason not too) the 77 308 is faster on a track than any of the other 3?8 series Ferraris until you get to the 348. Also, with the previous caveat, the carbed 308 is easier on the pocketbook maintenance wise than the later models.

Doc I used to play with E-type Jags, managed to drive a Pantera (no shoes) Daughter's car, drove a Miata for a few days ... I just think small and picture myself in the car next thing you know I am driving
Unfolding out of the car means left hand on the pavement while I pull the size 14s out of the footwell. And yes it looks like a circus act ! I have always dated married petite women perhaps I am in denial about my size...
