82 does not want to run.
Ok, I've read through the search of roughly 250 topics and found a couple of similar ideas and problems, but wanted to check here. The weather is supposed to be nice and I wanted to get the 928 fixed before winter.
Here is the problem, from the beginning:
Bought 82 928 roughly 2.5 years ago. Car seemed to run fine, had a few gremlins in some other systems (wipers, sunroof motor, trans neutral swtich, etc), but nothing too bad. I did notice that the car did not seem to have a lot of low end punch, but would really scream above 3k rpm. I assumed this was the nature of the vehicle. I have a 98 S10 4.3 V6 that seems to destroy the 928 off the line, but loses badly above 45mph. In the two years we did have a couple of weird things happen, actually it happened twice. Driving along everything fine and then the car would start running rough and would stall if not holding a foot on the gas. Let car sit for a couple of hours and it was fine. Car had 142k miles on it when we got it, right around 158k now. The t-belt was replaced by the P/O around 135k.
About 3 months ago, the battery on the car exploded. It had always run a little high on voltage (15.8 when cold, settle down to around 14 when warm) and I assumed that killed the battery. We got a new battery, installed it, car ran exact as it always had. Then our neighbor backed into the left rear fender. Car still ran fine for the 3 weeks it was before it could go to the shop. Took it to a body shop, rolled out the fender and repaint rear fender area. I didn't pick up the car, my g/f did and she barely made it home. Same type of symptoms. Won't idle. Stalls. Rough running. Only thing is this time it didn't go away as before. Giving gas doesn't seem to help. Runs best on first start, then stalls, then doesn't want to start. Doesn't smell rich anymore than normal (car always smelt a little rich).
Here is my plan from the posts I've read, any more ideas would be helpful.
Replace fuel filter.
Check plugs (I know from when they were changed last year that the rear cylinder on the driver's side likes to be wet when I pull it out).
Check plug wires and connections.
Any ideas on what to do next if that's not it? I've read about O2 sensors going bad and causing similar problems. Is there anything that the body shop could have done to cause a problem? I am fairly mechanically inclined, but I need instructions on how to do things (like from Nichols site). I don't want to spend $500-600 to take it to a shop to say it needs a tune up that I could have done. Please help. Thank you in advance.

Prety much look for fuel pressure, check injectors for flow, check for air leaks. Exploding battery is a faulty voltage regulator. I'm not sure where that is in the 928 I think it is attached to the alt. Slow off the line, well the '82 isn't a torque monster, but yiu can make it run better and breathe more freely, which will help, and you can always huff it.

Your car has had it tough recently!
Sounds like a vacuum leak -- I would inspect the intake system, vacuum resorvoir and related tubes etc. for leaks. Could be as simple as a hose popping off somewhere.
Beyond that, the field is pretty open... fuel, spark, timing, grounds etc. There have been a couple of posts recently about 83's not starting or not running properly. Please check those out for additional ideas. Start with the easy stuff (visual inspections, spark check, timing light if you have one) first, start knocking off some variables.
Like they say, engines are simple... they need spark & fuel.
Also, ALWAYS check and clean relevant fuses and relays (make sure all contacts are clean). I would further recommend changing the EFI relay as a matter of course in diagnosing nonstart issue because it's cheap & easy and helps eliminate at least some issues.
