I picked up an 85 5spd that was delivered without keys
I could swear there was a writeup on opening the hatch without the key (remote doesn't work) I'd prefer not to drill anything
TIA
Rixter
PS.. it's a parts car, 124k, black interior

If the mechanism/opener works but the wiring is screwed up you probably could hotwire the electronic release mechanism by the means of connecting it to a battery or something.
Maybe theres a mechanical way to do it also.. dunno really.

The hatch opens by turning a small motor that pulls the top white plastic thing down, releasing the hatch latch (!)
So .... can you crawl in and just unbolt the motor's two 10mm's (IIRC) and pull the whole dang thing down? Electrically is still the best bet (the small rounded black plug has IIRC weird electrical setup, something like two +'s and a switched ground) but I believe manually will do also.

If it spins but won't release the lock you may be able to adjust the motor up or down to get it to engage. The motor mounting holes are slotted for up and down adjustment.
I had a similar problem when I bought my car. The PO had actually tried to drill the lock out of the hatch and then still couldn't get it open. Don't go that route.

Victor with no key they probably have not started the engine or driven the car...so the answer would be ????? Rixster the easy way is get INSIDE the car with a drill and drill a hole into the main body as high as possible in the center (peel up the upholstery behind the tool kit cover) then use a screwdriver to reach in and push toward the rear to make the white latch piece in the upper black post move to the rear. Have some one out side push down on the hatch until you feel the white plastic move then have them lift up. Real dismantlers know this
actually most junk yards destroy more than they salvage.
