Since you may end up removing the sump without removing the drain plug, you should definitely consider this:

Update:
Well I'm giving up on the oil drain plug for now. I think I might try cutting a slot with a dremel and using a hand impact wrench on it. I'm at a loss otherwise. Maybe someone at the frenzy can help.

So far, I've got one MM out. I fricken forgot to pick up the right size nuts earlier today, so I can't put the new one's in. Tomorrow AM I'll run over to Home Depot and get the right nuts. After that, it should go pretty fast. I've had to use a breaker bar With a cheater bar on every nut & bolt except the MM nuts & bolts. I know the rack was replace not too long ago. The mechanic who did it should be shot. He thought ftlbs = ****ing tight like bubba said

I should have it all done tomrrow (knock on wood)

Today's Update:

Only had a couple of hours to work on it this morning, but I managed to get the right nuts for the new mounts, and got them in place and got the cross-member back in situ, and lowered the engine onto its new mounts. Everything seems to be in place and going well now.

Tomorrow or Tuesday, I'll be re-installing everything and buttoning it back up for the firing test. Can't wait.

Other things I noticed while under there:
One of the steering rack boots is bad, so I'll need to replace that. Also there was a large clump of grease on the driver's lower ball jall joint. I couldn't find a hole or split anywhere, so I'll have to keep an eye on it just in case.

What kind of MM's did you go with. Anchor's?

Yep. The anchors for about $56 shipping included. I measured the old mount and they measured in at a whopping 62mm compared to the 76mm of the anchors. Total lift = 14mm. Not a lot, but enough... I hope. I'll announce as soon as I get her running!

BTW, some people have said that they have received the Made in India mounts and had problems. I wrote a note on my on-line order to supply USA mounts only. Don't know if it worked or not, but I did get the USA mounts.

Like matt said i would try to reshape the nut and try some more.Maybe even dremel a slot down the middle for a large screwdriver.

Are there any mini oil filter type wrenches??

As Fabio is finding out the hex heads used on the 928 are terribly weak and shallow ex. the starter and the T-stat housing to block. Hey Fabio disconnect the brains before welding!!!

Default Uh oh... No Start!

Thanks for all the suggestions along the way. I'll tackle the drain plug another day

Fianlly got everything bolted back up late last night (12:30am). Thought I'd start it up and see if it would rock or not.

Put the key in the ignition...

turn the key...

radio comes on... then...

NOTHING!

I mean nada, zip, zero. It was completely dead! Looked at the battery gauge, and it was only showing 10+ volts, so somehow the battery drained while the ground strap was disconnected. Also, the only electric thing I touched was the ground strap - didn't touch the starter.

So I hooked up my trickle charger (maintainer) and went to try it this AM and still nothing, but the battery only shows 10.5~11 volts so it may need some more charging.

I had to come into work to post this... I mean to do my job and make some money, and won't be able to try it until later tonight, but wanted to confirm this was typical on a S4/GT for a low battery - I believe my OB would at least try and turn a little bit.

If it doesn't start later tonight, I'll use my minivan to jump it and see if that gets it to go. Any other things I should check? If I can't diagnose it tonight and end up needing parts, I won't be able to make it to the Frenzy.

An offering has already been made to the shrine....

Seems strange that your batt would pick now to die. She should make some effort to turn over - even with that slightly low voltage. There are a few MAJOR electrical connections down there that you may have accidently stressed. DOUBLE-CHECK the connections to the starter and the alt. Not just how they bolt, but make sure you haven't pulled one of the wires loose from the connectors themselves. With all your efforts/grunting on the oil pan drain screw - you could have easily kicked a wire loose.

I'm SURE you know this - but be VERY careful on jumping. ONLY jump with the posts in the engine bay - NEVER to the battery itself. Just to be safe - you may want to pull the batt from the minivan and try it as a direct replacement, rather then the jump. A bit more work - but can save you a BUNCH more $$$, as you don't want to fry something like the LH computer!!!

If the battery is reading ( at it's terminals) 10.5 -11v, one cell is DEAD!
Yank the battery and take it to your nearest Autozone/NAPA/ Canadian Tire (Opps - long drive ... ), and have a free CCA test done. Likely, a new unit will be the prognosis.

Thanks Mark. When it didn't start last night the first thing I thought of was to check the connections at the starter. Everything looked fine. I did not check the alternator so I'll check that, but shouldn't it still start?

Point taken on the jump terminals. That's kind of the reason for the post - I don't want to fry anytihng.

Garth, The nights have been getting pretty cool around here and from my experience that's when a dead/dying battery rears its ugly head. The good thing, however, is that my local Murry's Discount Auto carries the battery in stock! Hard to believe, but they do. But before I drop $80 on a battery, I need to get it started. I did not check the voltage at the terminals, but the car's volt meter has appeared to be pretty accurate - but I think you're right that I need to check at the terminals.

Once Upon a time I had and oil plug stuck in a '85 944 and I eventually Decided to grind the top of the mangled plug flat and button weld a big nut over the top of it. It worked great! Should only be a last resort though... if you decide to do this make sure you completely remove the brains, disconnect the battery, and ground your welder VERY close to the oil plug. I used the ground clamp to hold the nut up to the oil plug as i welded.

Just be ULTRA careful!!!! You can mess up alot of stuff if you're not careful welding on a 928....I'm sure you know that.

Andrew
It appears you have angered the 928 gods....have you not been attending ceremonies at the shrine regularly? I think another donation to the shrine is in order! Step back, kneel at the shrine and hoist a cold one to the 928 gods!
