Default T.Tube rattles- but rare in reverse

Hello.
My Torque Tube is dying a slow death.
In neutral it sounds like a mirraca band.
In any forward gear it sounds as if a singular mirraca player.
In reverse it sounds as if they've left the stage.
What gives, anyone?

Check the pinchbolts at both ends of the shaft. My rear pinchbolt was quite loose!

See my website Keepers, under Transmission - Torque Tube sounds like marbles.

Best of luck!

Thanks for your reply John Pirtle. I've checked the rear pinchbolt already and all seems tight. The front needs a look at though. The noise is eminating from the rear of my 88. There is also a drone which becomes more prominent the higher the speed. I can feel on the Trans. hump a high frequency vibration which increases pitch relative to speed.

Check rear flex plate shaft bearings. Just head about the case where TT was making strange sounds and one of two had spit out all it's *****.

Are you sure it's speed and not RPM? If it's speed then you're barking up the wrong tree and should be looking at axles, rear bearings, CV joints, and trans issues. If, it is RPM dependent, then you are in the right area. Sometimes we overlook these little things.

Hi Andrew Olsen. The Vibration/droning occured the same time as torque tube noise started-(wierd)
-T.T noise is relative to engine load and RPM.
Droning is relative to Wheel RPM- CV joints are good- Rear wheel bearings are good.
Why in reverse gear is the T.T quiet?..... hmmmm

thanks for your input.
My vehicle is an 88.- no rivets on flexplate.

I've pretty much reached my technical limit on this one. My only other thought on this is to check the rear drop links. I've rear some pretty weird reports of noise and what not because a rear link was loose or broken. Takes 30 seconds to check. I only suggest it because of the fwd-rev issue. The only other thing I can think of that might be direction dependent would be the trans itself. Hope you track it down.
