Default Traffic advisories-road construction? (for routes to Sharktoberfest)

Any traffic advisories for the West Coast for those of us driving down to Sharktoberfest? Any speed traps, road construction or general watch out fors that you could share would be apreciated!

We will most probably be using I-5 most of the way down. But I'm sure others might like some info from other directions.

haha..gotta love the directions to 928 Int'l from the Seattle area......Hit I-5 South bound for about 1100 miles...and exit into parking lot of 928 Int'l. haha..

Hard to get lost...unless you miss the exit..

Later,

Not exactly the case you do have to take the 91 freeway East from the 5 for a few miles to be in 928 Country. Plus for those from the North who wish to bypass central LA (traffic) taking the 210 freeway off the 5 just as you start to enter the valley cuts across through Pasadena to Pomona then the 57 freeway south brings you down to the 91 freeway and you are with in a couple blocks of 928 International .The hotel is a bit west of the 57/91 interchange off the 91 .

Shane, watch for bears on the grapevine -- that's the section of I-5 at the south end of the Ca. central valley(south of Bakersfield) that climbs up over the mountain and drops you into the L.A. basin. You can make good time through there if travelling during off-peak hours, just keep your eyes peeled. If you were taking 101 I'd say watch for King City; I think their whole economy is based on tickets! Aside from that, just stay alert... If you're used to driving in Washington, you should be well-prepared for Ca. bears. Just keep it well over 80 on I-5 so you don't get run over!

Jim,

So 210E/57S is relatively clear in the evening? Thanks for the tip! At what time of day would you estimate this route to offer diminishing returns over the more direct 5/91 route? I hope to be landing around 5-6pm Thurs. but might be delayed.

Dave,

Just my experience... you will be in the worst of the rush hour traffic arriving at that time, pretty much as you descend into the SF valley all the way into Anaheim. You may want to go to Magic Mountain for a while, or just grin and bear it. See you there Friday.

The 210 is relatively clear until you get past Pasadena and hit the 605 FWY since you are going against the commute but with all the new housing built on the extended eastern part of the 210 that section 605-to 57 south can be slow from 4-6pm or so. The 57 South is USUALLY pretty good again counter commute for most. The 5 fwy from LA will nearly always be heavy especially Friday afternoon and the 91 Fwy east starts to back up by 3:30-4 pm or so ! But hey it is not easy to move 14 million people around a 100 mi by 50 mile area ! Not to worry the party Friday night at the hotel will no doubt go very late ....

Just a suggestion to you folks coming in from the North or East, KNX (1070) has traffic reports every 6 minutes or else KFI (640) if you have trouble receiving KNX. May want to have an L.A. area map handy so you can follow along with the demolition derby and find alternate routes.

Thanks guys. If all goes well, and I can leave here at 10am tomorrow, I may be able to just beat the traffic, arriving at around 3pm. But, knowing myself, it's just as likely I won't get out of here before noon, which would put me in the thick of things. One of the main reasons I'm leaving tomorrow is to miss the Friday traffic, and to give myself some time to kick around town Friday.

Keith, if you're reading this... where is the car wash you mentioned?

The route on the 210 works somewhat better if you can use the carpool lanes. From 4-5Pm on Friday, almost all of the routes through or around downtown LA will be slow or worse. The 210 route is a new mainline for weekend traffic headed to Las Vegas via the 15, so there's some additional load.

If you have the option of getting down here a little early as Dave suggests, exercise that option. 3PM is a cruise, after 4 it's a crawl. The hour difference in leave time can save you an hour of driving just in the basin here.

I hope to get home in time to make the Friday reception but it will be close. Otherwise, see you on Saturday in Anaheim.

Shane, let my add to the comments by Sharkskin. If you come down 101, beware of anywhere around Goleta, CA. Don't speed on the Golden Gate Bridge at all, and stay out of the middle lane 'cause that's where the head-ons occur. Also watch around Marin County near San Rafael and then again near Sausalito clost to the Bridge. Lots of bears.

If you come down I-5, watch for white lines alongside and perpendicular to the roadway around Kettleman (sp?) City and beyond; they are used by aircraft. Remember that just because everyone is ripping along at 10 - 15 miles over along this "left lane train" route isn't reason for the CHPs to ignore the jealousy and stimulation they receive around 928s or any other P car for that matterthat are keeping up with them; watch the overpasses, and on ramps. Bring a V-1, and you'll have plenty of tunes on it. Or make the trip during the early morning to avoid the idiots in the left lane. For some reason, they are all headed for LA. Wonder what the significance is to that? As if there weren't already enough.....well, anyway.......

Dr Bob good deal, glad you could schedule your time to be able to be here. I was hoping you would comment on the traffic on the 210 since it is in your backyard.

Ooops... we overshot and landed in San Diego !
101 to 23 to 118 to the 210E to I-15S; we hit
210E at about 3:30; great to Pasadena(1/2 hr)
then crawl. They're right. Before 2 or 3 pm !

Tom, No bears 'til Mendocino, on CCH (CA 1).
Course we used back roads & the Low Profile Option.

G'luck all. Drive "high eyes", be careful. See you there.
