Has anybody put a blocker heater in their car?
How well does a 928 start in -25 degrees celcius?

A block heater should fit into one or both of the block drain plugs.

Hell Gelferd. I've btdt. As long as your car starts fine and quickly in the warmer Months, you should have no problems with a powerful new battery. Don't forget- thin out the oil. My car wasn't too happy starting with 20-50 in her bowels.

There is a type of oil heater too. Some type of electric dipstick, and it works.
As for block heaters they can also be tapped into a heater hose.

Hi Mike,

I have no idea. I saw this thread and googled engine block heater, read a thread from car guys, then posted, sounding like I knew what I was talking about. I love the net.

I think I'll take a look around for a block heater. I imagine I'll have to talk to a Porsche dealership for that.
It usually gets below 30 at least once a winter, so I might need one. It started good this morning at -5, so I'm hopeful. How would you recommend thinning out the oil? Would adding a litre of 5W50 do it?

Doug Hillary has recommended using synthetic 5W40 (Delvac 1, Mobil 1 Truck & SUV, or Shell Rotella T Synthetic) in colder climates. You could check with the Big 3 to see if they have or can get the 928 block heaters. I'm pretty sure it was an option on new 928s.

There are many other style heaters but heating cooling water directly is best solution. Especially when it's done inside block or head. Most common place to put water heater on S4 is rear end of passager side head. Since this hole is at front on drives side it can't be used. Some Mercedes models use same heater element, see http://www.defa.com.

All oil should be 5W-30 to 5W-50 in winter driving. And get interior heater too.

I have a block heater from Defa sitting in the garage.
Supposed to be mounted like Erkka says in the rear of the passenger head.
Looks to be very tight to work there (as many other things on the 928) so it is still on the to do list

Cameron,
I'm located at Prince George, in northern British Columbia, Canada. It gets a little colder than Florida I imagine.
