If the compressor is pulling 30HP this will be equivalent to 6.4 tons of cooling. This seems to be a lot for a car!!!!

30hp for a compressor would stall most cars when the clutch engages at idle. There are still 80hp cars driving around with A/C that can climb hills without being at WOT. I was always told A/C is 5-10hp and I wouldn't be surprised if it was less.

I agree! It is possible the A/C compressor can draw 30hp when the engine aproaches red line, but not at idle.

Its nice to see that my idea had some merits. Even if someone beat me to it. I fully expected to have lots of holes shot into it and be flamed into submission. Thanks.

My 30hp is hearesay from another thread I read. It could be suspect info. But it takes SOMETHING - you can feel it drag on any new car. SOMETHING.

Well, when my Acura MDX with a 260hp engine is idling at a light, and if its slightly rolling - it will STOP rolling if the AC goes on. Thats quite a bit of drag on the engine.
