Driving the 88 S4 today in the rain, five minutes into the run and the driver seat and drivers wing mirror started moving all by themselves!!
Very alarming as a short ***, as the seat started to move back fully!, the question is how do I disable the memory function, every time I try to re-adjust it just moves back and the mirror constantly trys to move.
The short sharp solution is just to disable the memory but the fuse box layout offers no immediate solution as to which fuse to pull, I've got a prettty full schedule and need the car on the road, pulling the mirror adjustment fuse No. 12 didn't help with the mirror and I need the fuse for the seat fuse in order to re-adjust.
Now even with the ignition off and doors locked the mirror still keeps moving-so I disconnected the earth strap meantime.
Any Idea's???

Sound to me like the usual algie and wiring scenario
. Lets look back into the cars history, and the items that have had the diy touch. mmmmmmm
Could it be that after the seats were re-piped and you rewired the broken connector, something may not have been put back 100% .
Sounds as though the memory select is shorting out. If you want to disconnect something, then disconnect that plug under the seat. I will put the fluke in the taxi, and we can trace the short when possible.

Dear Truescotsman,
Please note this is an open forum- on the world wide web-please do not disparage my DIY skills amongst my peers, however truthfull this may be.
Tell the truth to the world son, the fastsest 928 you've ever been in is mine, and that hurts!

Algie,
Try removing the memory button plate and disconnecting the switch there - plate just lifts out and the connector just pulls off. This may not work but its the easiest thing to start with....
If it does work - start cleaning these switches as best you can...
The memory stuff is split between the underseat unit (seat) and the mirror memory in the drivers footwell above the hood release... since both are going wild both are affacted so its likely on the input control side (I'd bet).... The way these work is that there is a motor that drives the unit (seat or mirror) and there is also a potentiometer on the motor driven part that feeds back a voltage relative to its position. The memory unit tries to drive the unit to match that voltage with the stored value. Usually it drives one way until it gets to the right value.. If it doesn't match it usually starts hunting up & down for about 1 minute and then gives up. Of course it can do this in each plane of movement that is possible.... It doesn't always do this concurrently - some mechanisms can drive only one plane at a time...
Seems most likley that there is a flakey connection issue somewhere in the input or feedback sides...

Your car likely only seems faster .... as your f/u'd seat has you constantly moving in reverse: Recall the theory of Relativity .... Originally Posted by algie928s4

Problem solved?- As James always asks- "What did you touch", usually solves my motoring woes, I thought back, I replaced the drivers door handle, storage box assembly recently with a perfect one purchased on ebay- mine was badly cracked on most of the mounting holes and you could feel movement when closing the door from the inside.
In short this came with a memory button assembly as well, which I fitted, I took this one out and replaced with my original memory button assembly and all works well .........fingers crossed.!

Oh! Garth, not only does it feel quicker- it's officially recorded as the fastest 1/4 mile 928 at Crail, although Jim may now try moving his seat forward as he trys to catch up!
Thanks for the techy stuff Alan, I'll use it if my first attempted repair fails!
