After looking at all the options and applying the information acquired while observing the dyno process I've decided that a programmable engine management system is the next logical step in the hunt for horse power.
Anyone have any experience with the Perfect Power SMT-6? It's the system Louie recommends and that's probably the way I'll go.

Several PacNW 928er have em..and they seem to do the job. On their dyno runs....fuel is exactly where they want it. It also allows the ing timing to be adjusted. Kind of like an infinitely adjustable autothority chip.
It is a little more difficult to install as one has to cut into the harness (we are fortunate to have some electrical specialists up here).
Get one from Louie and maybe get him to include a premade map from one of his thousand or so dyno runs on his GT....

I have used the SMT 6 and really like it. It's not too hard to install and does exactly what it says it does. You can add or subtract fuel and spark anywhere in the rpm range.

Since 85 and 86 engines do not have knock sensors, is there any possibility of doing an aftermarket sensor system that could give the SMT 6 a little "please retard" input?

actually...the fuel tuning is primarily at WOT...ign tuning is the complete range. You can input values for fuel changes at non wot positions, however, the LH will try to correct since it is getting constant info from the o2 sensor. It should be noted though that this can be used to get the values in the range that the LH can properly control the fuel mixture at non wot. Louie has had great success doing this on a wild cammed 88 AT big motor that was giving him fits initially. Got it to pass emissions after it failed numerous times.

more power with cats?? someone over this side of the pond is constructing an x pipe and he has posted that he has had most success with some ?expansion? chambers placed after the X.

An expansion chamber after the X would only help if the X is improperly designed. The scavanging effects of the X are well documented and velocity of exhaust gases has a lot to do with it. Expansion chambers lose gas velocity.

We actually perfromed three tests: straight tubes, expanded tubes that look to the untrained eye to be "cts", and the third was with cats. All three measured within a few hp of each other.
?The cats are 300 cell metal foil ...
