engine management
This is probably properly directed to Rich Andrade or JohN Speake but i'm sure others know the answer. In looking for a replacement engine for my 87 euro auto am i going to have brain problems with a different year engine....I think 88 is totally compatible but how about 89,90,91 MY's. In the end, if i can find a low mileage engine with good specs i'm sure the brains can be adapated or changed.
87 euro auto needs a new heart.

Hello,
If you get an 89/90 or 91 S4 engine then you can use the same ECUs without any changes. There is no need to upgrade the wiring harness to include the "igntion protection relay" just because it was used with the later cars. Later EPROMs do have cleverer diagnostics, and also better adaptation and default limp home modes. Not an essential upgrade, but it is an easy chip swap.
If you get hold of a GT engine (lucky man !) then you would need a pair of chips with GT fuel maps and idle speed. The higher idle speed won't suit the auto so well. But we are working on a hybrid EPROM which will match the GT mapping to the idle speed drop required for autos.
Regards

Why not do what Kibort did and use 85/86 cams. They are cheap and easy to find and the modification seemed reasonable.

Some engines come with the wiring harness. If you have a very early '87, the EZK connector can be different than later '87 and newer 928s. If you get an '89 or newer engine, you'll need to either swap your older wiring harness or also be sure that you have the goods for the ignition monitoring system.
This is a fairly major change and you need to be aware of that! Other than that (and the possible GT) you're OK with the original LH and EZK.

Let me know how your hybrid chip for GT's come out.. I am trying to get a set of GT cams to use with my auto box... The chips are easy...!

Ok Richard,
We are focussing on the SharkTuner at present, but are also looking into the idle copntrol system software. I will announce any GT/auto chips on Rennlist when they are available.

thanks John and Rich.....to follow up your comments Rich, are you saying that regardless of whether or not my motor is an early 87, the wiring harness from a 90 engine will NOT be compatible? The engine i'm considering had a fan bearing fire which scorched some of the front engine wiring but otherwise did only superficial damage....by wiring harness, do you mean ignition wires or more likely, the wiring harness which connects to the EZK....
thanks

If you use the '89 or later wiring harness, it will require the ignition control box, and you'd need to fit the temperature sensors and their related wiring. So, you'd need the new engine exhaust manifolds too. There may be other changes in the systems that need to be convirted too.
If you get an '89 or later engine, I suggest that you keep your '87 wiring harness and transfer all the wiring over to the newer engine. Otherwise, you'll need to study the not so easy to read schematics and figure out what circuits need to be added and purchase all the stuff to make a complete '89 or newer system to feed the harness - the folks at 928 International may know more about the differences. I'm not saying that it cannot be done, it can take a lot of work to get it right.
The good news is this doesn't affect the LH module. It could affect the EZK module "if" you have the very early '87 EZK unit (another reason to use your old wiring harness).
