Hey Curt,
The cam profiles have some noise creating differences. The hotter cams in the 85/86 create more noise than the S4 cams do even with the same exhaust. I have put the same exhaust on both an 86.5' and an S4, the S4 was considerably quieter. This has held true with a couple of different 86.5's and S4's.

At any rate i have been "testing" with my testpipe and RMB for two years and IMHO it is not overbearing UNTIL you start hammering the gas pedal. Even at WOT the sound is loud but musical. The car always gets comments like, "that thing sounds awesome" while at stoplights.
Did I tell you how good it sounds? Simply amazing!
