Default WARNING: Guys installing the backlit door sill upgrade.

I got mine Thursday, and installed them tonight, I did the driver side first, looked great, then closed that door and went to the passenger side, it took a few hours messing around, in and out of the garage, all of a sudden I started smelling something, the driver side little black box started smoking and almost caught fire, under my driver seat!!! When I noticed the driver side was hotter then hell and smoking like a train, I checked the passenger one, it was hot as hell too, but the passenger one while wiring it up would not work, thats when I started smelling something. Now I know what you guys are thinking, (I wired it wrong) I wired them just like Andrew did in his write up, besides there's only one way to wire them so they will work. So I am UNinstalling them tommarrow. Just not worth it. I am also emailing the guy I we got them from on ebay, I am PISSED!!!

I buy ALOT on Ebay, but stay away from unknown custom parts guys. I quickly learned they sell junk, mislead what they are offering (for example a "carbon fiber shift ****" that really was heavy cast pot steel (over 1 pound) with a graphite decal around part of it... etc. My ebay experiences have generally been outstanding - but then I bought every 928 I have (including parts cars, via ebay - or learned of it through ebay and bought it later (Tammons turbo 928).
I also sell quite a bit online and on ebay, but unrelated to cars.

Justin I had one of those short-out on me, but it's because the heat-shrink tubing the guy put on the leads didn't cover the leads completely and thus shorted out on the sill. It's a bit unclear to me, was your heat coming from the transformers?

Actually, there's two ways to wire them. You might have hooked into the lead that had the lights in an "always on" position. The lights should be wired only to have power when the doors are open.

Either way, thanks for the alert.

Mine have been 'cool' for a month now. Thanks for the advisory - will report if I have any similar problem.

My experience with that seller was very good - I'd give him a chance to correct it before you blast him.

Yea, I know, I had checked it with the door pin to make sure.

Randy, I am not really blasting him YET, I had them hooked correctly. I emailed him last night, so we will see. Just do me a favor and keep an eye on the transformer boxes. I dont know if any of you have kept your doors open for an extended amount of time, but that might be the problem.

I had a transformer go bad on me too. The situation was pretty much as Andrew described and it was more my fault than anything else as I had forced the already fragile connection a bit too much.

One thing I noted is that these transformers emit a faint buzz or hissing sound, which I believe is normal. But just before going bad, mine became noticeably louder. Enough to grab your attention.

Mine have been running cool (and buss free) for about a month also.
But I will keep an eye (and an ear) on them.

Thanks for the head's up

Paul

The high frequency hissing sound is normal. Mine are installed nearly a full year with no problems at all.
Thanks for the heads up!

FYI..dont rely on the door pin switch to work all the time either. I have my intercooler pump wired to the window power..which is in turn routed through the door switch. This allows me to run the intercooler pump after i shut the engine down but before i open the door. Once i open the doors the pump quits ..as do the windows. I have wired a lighted switch to the circuit and one day i shut the car down, opend the door and the pump kept running. I traced it to a bad door switch. I tweeked the door switch a bit and sprayed some contact cleaner in it.
Works well now.
