This also supports idea that engine number grows steadily and little faster than VIN.

-G28/03 #1180075 (this car may be close to US #16 in age?)
Very possibly. ROW was much more common in early months based on some of the part change points which were done during '78 MY. VIN 0326 should for example have early style long TT center shaft, short clutch shaft and short front clamp combination.

-has no side marker lights OR side turn signals. Inspection of the inside left fender shows that the holes were never stamped into the fender (??). Was there an export market that required side turn signal delete? I have never seen another example of this.
ROW turn signal behind front wheel wasn't mandatory at the time at most markets if any and many early cars do not have it. For example 0221 don't.

I'm bumping this in hopes someone can answer a question for a German owner of a 77 model. He currently has his car at the paint shop, and they want to know where exactly the early models had the rough protective layer under the paint.

From looking at pics of Chuck's Frog, it seems that stuff was only used on the rockers, below the door; I can't see any in front of the front wheels or behind the rear wheels.

I can't tell from the pics on this page, either.

I know that later models had the rough coating going higher, almost 2 inches up the doors. Not sure when they changed that, but it does not apply to the car in question.

Anybody know how this is on the very early 1977 cars?

Exact same question came up at Finnish Porsche discussion forum while back when one '79 MY was heading to repaint. All I could find at the time was early '77 pictures from factory taken by Dan (Edgy01). Attached is zoom in on one of his pics. Horizontal line seems to be right below door level. I suspect thats how high they put it early on.

Concerning the quarter window trim, my silber 78 #348 has brushed aluminum trim which has never been anodized. Think this may have been more common on the earlier 928's. The windshield trim has been painted black at some point.

ditto my rear quarter trim. Windshield trim was black when I bought mine in '90.

US '78 MY 0052 has those early style door rotary **** too. Even though it is US model it was originally sold in Germany. Later it went to Israel and now is in Finland. Engine appears to be original and is US automatic engine M28/04 number #24 IIRR. Also has ROW head light adjusters which were in it before car came to Finland, very likely original. It was originally petrol blue with brown pascha. Now both paint and interior has been changed. Seats are from '85 MY.

I have Euro no 18 and it has the same door lock **** on one side...
The other one has probably been replaced.
So definitely original Porsche.
Have seen them on other very early models too.
My chassi is no 18 of all production models and my engine is confirmed matching and has no 40.
So Erkka is right again...!!)))

my #38 had one star door lock also I figured someone had replaced it with something from a stereo shop it was on the drivers side and had a normal one on the pass side its available if you need another. #38 also has all molded plastic pannels under the upolstery meaning all the pannels still have their proper shape even the dash being cracked hasn't erupted in the big splits like the cardboard ones. when pulling the door pannels off you should find the the map pockets are seperate pieces to the pannel itself. I will look closer at the cluster later tonight.
