Default Bang, you're dead. 1 Shark, 1 kill. :)

"UPS Shark" vs 96' 240SX

The 240SX is my neighbor's car, and is a really clean little red beauty. It is also surprisingly tasteful, with no hint of 'ricing' to be found.

Big deal you say?

Well, he has a 5 speed with a frontmount intercooled aftermarket turbo installed running 11psi of boost with full electronic boost control and 3" full race exhaust.

He got it dynoe'd maybe two weeks ago, and was putting down 285rwhp(figure about 350 at the crank)...and the car only weighs 2700lbs vs my sharks 3050lbs(estimated). He's also running super wide 285/35/18s.

Do i have your attention now?

Well, he's been talking smack with me for months as he was building the car(of course i did my share too, lol), so we were out front trying to help another neighbor get his Mustang started(what a shock...a broken ford), and after determining he needed a starter we were all hanging out just chatting, and me and T(the owner of the 240) decided it was finally time to race tonight(about four hours ago).

So all the guys load up in the cars, i got a 160lb Brazilian for a passenger, and he loaded two like sized brazilians in his car...both in the back seat(lol, cheater!).

So we pull off my street onto Roosevelt Blvd(US1), do a little relaxed casual traffic weaving(nice light traffic) to get to the front of the pack at a redlight, and then...the moment of truth is at hand.

SO i rev the motor to 2000rpm full on the brakes and wait for the light to change. I hear his little wind-up toy rev to what had to be 4000rpm.

Light turns green and it's GO!!!!

Well, RIGHT off the get go i have him by 1 length. Then by 10mph it's already 2 lengths...and rapidly growing as i see him in my sideview mirror almost 45 degrees out of line with a cloud of tire smoke behind him. So of course i'm still in it....and the lead keeps growing....4 lengths by 20mph, 6 lengths by 30mph and growing....LOL....a ROUT!!!!

By the time i let off the throttle at about 80+ mph i had a no **** 12 car length lead on him and my Brazilian passenger was so excited i'd have thought he was at a World Cup FIFA match with his team up by 4 goals as time expired!!!

So we get to the next light, and T pulls up(several seconds after me, lol), and says, "Man i got bad traction bill...let's try again"(of course i'm thinking, 'no **** you got bad traction').

Not being one to dissapoint and feeling mighty cocky, i tell him, sure...

So up to 2000rpm i rev(and this is even at 30psi in the rears, not my drag launch standard 20psi)... wait. wait. wait... GREEN MEANS GO!!!

SAME exact result on launch, i pull out to a HUGE lead(and this is with 320+ lbs of brazilian sitting right above his rear axle!).
This time i'm not feeling so generous, and we have a nice 1/2 mile run to the next light, so i stay in it. Almost 10 lengths by 70....15 lengths by 90...whoa!!!!...12 lengths...10 lengths and CLOSING FAST....finally down to 8 lengths at about the 1/4 mile mark(MAN THAT CAR HAS KILLER TOP END!!!), but then it's time for him to brake.

Well let me tell you a 240SX DOES NOT brake like a lightened 928S, so i stay in it as he brakes to prove the point...back up to 10 lengths at 110mph...15....20....25, lead opening up REALLY fast, up to 120mph now....30(obviously the lengths i was ahead by are very rough estimates as when someone's that far back it's really hard to accurately judge).....NOW i brake and come to a smooth stop from about 125mph- a good 10 feet before the lines.

Wait. wait. wait... here comes the little 240SX turbo needing every foot of distance to stop in time for the light. The smoke is POURING out of his front rims from his horribly overheated brakes.(i later found out he had to engage the hand brake to fully stop, lololol).

Me laughing as i roll up ten feet to get next to him..."Damn T, is your car on fire?"

He stammered out an excuse as a couple guys in an SUV that had been full in it to keep up came rolling up to the light on my right and ENTHUSIASTICALLY started giving me BIG THUMBS UP and jabbering on about how my Shark is the "meanest car i've ever seen, WHAT the HELL do you have in that thing?", and blah, blah, blah.

My Brazilian passenger- who's never been in any porsche, let alone a modified and lightened V-8 Porsche screaming through a full race Borla 3" exhaust, is babbling on in Portugese to one of the guys in the back of the 240SX who's leaned forward and is hanging out the window.

It was a scene of babbling enthusiastic bedlam, and the Shark was the center of the show.

SUV to the right of me, Brazilians to the right- here i am- stuck in the middle with you.

So anyway we turned for home at that point, and on the way back i gave him a rolling launch from about 15-20mph just so his ego could remain intact and because i like him.

He blew my freaking doors off.(i'm gonna guess 5 lengths by the time we'd hit 100mph).

LOL.

Strangely, after that third run, T declined my offer to take a trip over to Kruztown road to try his hand at the twisties.

Go figure...

Anyway, when drag racing it is ALL about the launch my friends, and i've never owned or driven ANY car that launches like my A/T 928S.(it was my shark's awesome launch that let me take Lance in his 83 Euro 928S A/T with 65shot of nitrous too, lol).

To be honest i'm actually kinda glad T had the sense not to try out his luck in the twisties(and if he had i'd have insisted the passengers be dropped off beforehand).

Kruztown road has claimed MANY a bold or careless persons life over the years(see the video clip i posted before- that's kruztown road), and at the speeds i can achieve through there with my brand new bilstien/eibachs and 245/45/16s all around he'd have almost certainly killed himself trying to keep up.

PORSCHE....There is NO substitute.

M21: You need turbochargers on that car. Your description above would be indicative of a large rather laggy turbo on that 4-cyl.

He made tons of power from probably 3000rpm on Herr....he just couldn't put it to the ground(even with 285/35/18 rears, which further confirms that lsuper ow profile tires suck for launching).

I asked him why he was launching so high after we got back home, and he told me that if he'd have launched from idle i'd have probably beat him worse due to lag.

So you're probably right in your assessment Herr. I would LOVE to get turbos on my car...but it's out of the budget. Second choice would be an SC..also out of the budget. What's not out of the budget is a simple wet shot 50-100hp nitrous kit(such as the one Kibbort and A.Olsen ran/run), and i have that planned. With a 75shot i think i'd have equalled or exceeded his rolling start performance.

My old T-type which had a TH350/1800rpm stall converter(vs OEM TH200R4/2200rpm) transplanted in by the PO was the same way. I couldn't build boost at all at the line, so everything around would take me off the line then it was all catchup the rest of the race for me.
Once i put the 2800rpm stall converter in with 10.5" wide 15" dot cheater slicks it was a whole differnet story, as i could launch at 10psi of boost(18psi in the tires) while getting good traction. Just changing the converter/tires cut almost 2 full seconds off my ET in the big buick(mid 14 to mid 12).

Lance- I think he would still handily beat a Euro 928S of any model or year in straight line acceleration from a 20mph rolling start up until he ran out of RPMs, probably at about 135-140(due to gearing). I'd like to run him myself top end to see at what speed he could hold me off too, but that wasn't on last nights docket.

Your Euro would've kept it closer until he ran out of R's, but considering that when you and i did rolling starts i was actually able to nose you by 1/2 length one time(when my car was a good 150lbs heavier than now), and that he beat me by a solid 5 lengths from 20-100, no, i think his car is out of the leaugue of any stock Euro 928 until about 120+mph.

If he put slicks, drag shocks, and LSD in that thing he'd probably run a 12 flat.

However, in all other forms of racing a 928 of any year would absolutely eat his 240SX turbo's lunch. The car is totally lacking in braking and handling.

Hey...Nitrous might actually decide to scatter those brittle pistons...that stuff is brutal on parts if you are not careful. I prefer one inlet for fuel and O2...but this has been done on a 928 before with decent results.

Default SR-20!!! but no V8 sounds... the sounds of lots of compression...

I week ago I drove a 240sx with a SR-20 engine from a japanense front clip (180sx silvia).

That was an amazing little car... Downpipes and boost control added... very little lag and the shifter and clutch were nice) the car felt as fast as my 928... But mine is not lightnened and is stock right now...

I got scratch going itno 3rd at about 55 mph.... it was fun...

My buddy who owns it and I have not raced... and he says he need to sell the car for practicallity sakes... He is into old 240Zs and built that one for fun...

My car is getting close to roadworthiness mostly creature conforts to work on...

Herr, when i install the nitrous i'm going to install a wet kit that shoots the extra fuel and nitrous together from one nozzle(i've been looking at the spray bar setups, and i'm thinking about running one under the air filter but above the AFM in the lower airbox housing to ensure equal distribution.

I plan to start out at the minimum 50hp jet setting and work my way carefully up to the 75hp jet after careful examination of the plugs, and a series of leakdown/compression tests.

I know my 4.7 is already something very special, so i'm going to be very, very careful not to blow it up if i can help it, lol. Kibbort and Olsen have had great results, so i think i should be OK at a 75shot setting.

If for some reason it does ever blow up, i'll be going a whole different route and making the first ever 2700lb 500+HP Buick V-6SFI Turbo powered 928S the world has ever seen. I have a brand new balanced and blueprinted zero mileage Buick 3.8SFI Turbo long block sitting in my garage collecting dust anyway, lol. The 3.8 is a very light and compact motor...so i don't expect it would be very difficult to adapt it to the 928 chassis.

Iceman, if my 16v ever blows up, or if i ever take it apart for any reason, i'll be sure to list all components and dimensions for the 16v faithful here at the list.

Yeah my neighbor is real into them too. He had a really sharp little maroon 240SX(a little older, like a 94 i guess) before this one, and that was also T-charged.
He got his motor complete turn key from japan for 2200 i think he said, and added full electronic turbo/boost control with 3" downpipe/racing exhaust. It's a nasty little car when it's in it's element, which is straight line rolling start acceleration. Like i said i expect to have to install a 50 to 75hp shot of Nitrous just to match his accel. from a rolling start.

If i can run a 12.99 or better on the 50 shot i'm not even screwing with the 75hp jet...but i think a 50shot at my current weight will put me at about a 13.1.

I do still want to yank another 100-150lbs off my shark though(though i'm getting to the point where shaving more weight becomes serious work, lol), so a 12.99 with a 50shot is a possibility. If i can save the extra stress on the motor i'm definitely going to.

Isn't the buick 3.8 V6 an iron block engine....what does that thing weigh? I'm sure its lighter than a 928 V8 (since everyone knows they are heavy). It should be a shorter engine too, which might help set the engine even further back in the chassis....but then it wouldn't have 50/50 weight balance anymore either? But 500hp from a GNX engine isn't much....those can make way more power than that! Kinda like the Supra straight six or ford 4.6 V8

m21 was somebody videotaping your race? I found a video titled "Porsche Chasing (240SX vs V8 924)" on TorrentSpy. I haven't found a seeder yet, so I don't know what the video looks like.

Not that i know of bro. There were plenty of witnesses though, so it's highly possible. If it's silver with a Pa tag, it's a safe bet it was me. I sure hope they caught one of the standing start runs, because i blew that red 240SXs freakin' doors off both times!

If ya find a link do post it though.

The 3.8 V6SFI with iron heads is about 150lbs lighter than an SBC(of course the weight of the turbo system cuts into that, but can be fully offset with aluminum champion heads, which i would probably not be running). An SBC is of course a good 100lbs lighter than a 928 motor, so figure a net loss of 200lbs.
And yeah, the motor is very much shorter than a 928 engine(probably about a foot or so i guess), which would leave me plenty of room up front for a big ole' remote mount turbo and all neccesary plumbing.

500hp is not much HP at all from a Buick V-6 3.8SFI. You can get that much HP from a stock motor with just straight up bolt ons.
The maximum power output of the Buick V-6 turbos is almost limitless, but i have to consider what i'm putting it in. If i were to go with a Buick Turbo six i'd be arbitrarilly setting the max crank HP number at around 500ish hp because i wouldn't want to start busting up the drivetrain in my 928, and to be honest, i couldn't afford to have frequent driveline failures anyway.

Typically a Turbonetics TA-44 turbo@ around 14psi, 36-40# injectors, 80mm MAF, 3" downpipe, free flowing exhaust(which i've obviously already got in place), hi flow fuel pump with 14v voltage booster, ported stock intercooler, and a custom burnt chip is all it takes for 500hp, with no internal mods neccesary.

Figure about $2k in parts new, about half that if you can find the stuff on ebay(which you usually can).

I expect that by shaving about 200lbs off the front end of my 928 i'd end up with a car that had more of a 911 type 'feel', with mild 911 like characteristics(of course the engine would be set back further, closer to the cars center). I would try to offset the weight loss up front by concentrating on the back end of the car for further weight savings, but i really don't know how much i have left back there to yank. I've already taken out most of the easy stuff, front and rear, and i'd certainly want to maintain a nice looking and comfortable interior.

Really the only 'no brainer' weight savings i have left is a rear seat delete, and interior sound deadening removal. Based on what i've read there's about 75lbs of sound deadening, and the rear seats weigh in at about 30lbs for the pair.

Currently im at about 3050lbs, so figure another 100ish lbs from weight savings, and a net loss of about 200lbs for the motor, for a total empty weight of about 2750lbs.

2750lbs + 500HP would = one extremely fast 928S.

That's a mindnumbing 5.5lbs:HP vs the stock 83 US 928S power to weight ratio of 14.3lbs:HP!

According to my handy drag calculator that works out to a 11.27 ET @ 120.9mph(based on 2900lbs w/driver and 400RWHP)
By using a single big TA-44 i'd be able to launch at about 4psi of boost at 2000rpm, and would not get full on boost to about 3500rpm, so launch traction should still be excellent.

That's enough performance to run with any Porsche around except a Carrera GT....a car that costs literally 47x more money than i own my 928 for. God only knows what the top speed would be.

I'm certainly not planning on blowing my beloved Porsche V-8, and i'd be really bummed if i did, but for the cost of replacing it with a 16v motor of equal performance( i dont want to get involved in the interference 32v motors) it would be FAR cheaper to use the balanced 3.8SFI motor i already have sitting around...and the end results would be a hell of a lot more exhillirating.

What would be required to mate the Buick V-6 to the 928? Well, that's the unknown, but where there's a will and a good machine shop, there's a way.

Sorry for babbling.
