Default Replacing inner door handle

Hey guys,
I've looked everywhere (including the shop manual) on how to replace the inner driver side door handle, but I haven't been able to find any instructions. Some questions:

1) How long would this take?
2) How hard is it to do?
2) If I can't do it myself (I'm but a novice), how much should it cost to get it done? I tried asking the local Porsche service shop, but they won't give me a number (and it's not listed on All-Data).

I've read some horror stories about doing anything with the inside of the door, so I'm not sure I will attempt it or not. I'll decide based on your recommendations.

Thanks, guys!

I will be doing it tonight on the driver's side provided the parts arrive today. I will take pictures as i go. This is my second time doing it, it's very common to have them break.

the nichols website has a writeup for this procedure.

Just type "Nichols 928" into google, it should be the first hit.

  1. See Rennlist 928 Forum thread "Broken door handle hinge replacement: nasty!!".
  2. See George Suennen's write-up "Door Handle 1990 928S4". It's helped a lot of people do this job, me included. Just did mine about 6 weeks ago.

Thanks for the responses guys. 928drvr86.5, I'll wait for your pics and decide then. Is the actual handle broken (mine just snapped when I tried to open the door), or is it something internal? Also, the lock on the driver side is broken as well, so if I do dig into the door, I may try to fix that, too - but this may be even more complicated, so I don't know. Thanks, again,

Dallas

Oh, you're in for a treat.

When my driver's side handle busted, the lock did not work either. There are a number of levers, switches, arms and adjustments that can be made in there. Once you replace the hinge, test each component as you re-attach it to ensure functionality. You will also find it lots easier if, like many people on this board, you delete the anti-slim-jim plate. I deleted mine. No compromise of function. I figure if somebody wants the car, they're just going to smash the window anyway.

Good luck.

It can be done.

Dallas,

I'm not sure we're all talking about the same thing, here. You say "inner door handle", which to me means the lever you pull to open the door from inside, so one can exit the vehicle.

Others are talking about a broken exterior door handle, the fix for which is usually a hinge you need to access from inside the door (i.e. behind the door panel). This is the PITA job.

Can you clarify your problem?

chaadster - yes, it is the actual plastic handle that you pull while inside the car in order to open the door. One day (I may have been in a hurry), I pulled it, and SNAP! The darn thing broke in my hand. So now in order to exit, I have to push what's left of the handle (very little) in order to open it.

A seperate problem that has been around since before this happened (ever since I've owned the car), is that the driver's side door won't unlock from the outside with the key. That issue is probably over my head, though, so I don't think I'll touch it.

The outer door lock problem is most likely a linkage popped off. You can remove the lock cylinder by popping off the grommet that is just inboard of the door seal and removing the screw that you find there. Should be easy enough to pull the lock cylinder out enough to see what's going on.

Dallas,

Well, I'm happy to report that your broken interior door handle should be an easy fix. The handle is a simple lever, connected via a cable, to the door latch. I'd suggest hitting www.928intl.com for a replacement lever. It's unlikely that you've got any other damage than the obviously broken handle, so it's just an R&R.

Check out this thread, Paul Champagne has some good tips a few posts in: https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...de+door+handle

You should not have any trouble finding instructions on door panel removal; searching the forum will turn up lots on that.

Looks easy; let us know how it goes!
