Paint and Body (Model Year 83)
My 83 has a beautiful paint job on it. It must have cost a lot ... because it's very "flat" and extremely nice over 99.99% of the body. It has a couple of chips on the door edges which is ok ... but I'm having all kinds of weird paranoid thoughts since I'm in the NE (wet and rainy) and ... I'm seeing bubbling of the paint in a couple of areas.
The areas are - in front of the windshield (1/4" x 1/2"); - immediately underneath the wing on the hatch (3/16" x 1/2").
I have tools but little experience with paint. I did a basecoat/clearcoat job about two years ago using ppg and it turned out pretty nice. But, when I went to buy ppg basecoat/ clearcoat for my other car 6 months ago ... the tech sales guy recommended a different clearcoat. I have no experience with a porsche body - what is it galvenized (like a range rover)?
I have an hvlp setup but it takes me a long time to select paints and primes and procedures. Can anybody recomment paints, primes, procedures and a business with competitive pricing ... in the US?
Also, what do you do with the bumper cover. The paint seems to fade. The previous owner told me it polishes out but doesn't that thin out the paint if you do it too much?
Thanks very much,
Tim

The bumpers can be media blasted. You can start from Scratch with the Specialty series from PPG and thier plastic adhesion promoter and SX 1057. The bumpers are fun.
The rear of the body and frame are galvenized, the doors, hood, fenders are all aluminum.
