Default afermarket guages

The stock cluster in my 79' track car project is toast. So... I'm thinking of scrapping it all and installing a set of plain old hotrod type guages. The temps and pressures should be no problem but what about the speedo? I need it because the car is still street legal. Has anyone ever used the stock speedo pickup to operate an aftermarket speedo? Same question for the gas guage...
Another advantage to going this route is that I can place them where quick visibility is better, rather than looking through the wheel. Also... I no longer have any of the stock wiring so I can start with a clean slate.
Thoughts?

I have a full set of VDO mechanicals i'm going to be installing pretty soon.

They're 2 1/16", which coincidentally fits perfectly in the clock hole of an early 928. So i secured myself such a panel, and i'm going to hole saw 2 1/16" holes on either side of the existing hole, and install them there.

I think it's going to look really sharp, and be an OEM quality look and install.

I'll post pix when it's done.

I've just about completed my 79 track car it will be ITE/Spo class legal so I gutted it including the dash and pod. I bulit a panel that mounts where the pod was, in a half circle shape the same diameter as the steering wheel. I used auto meter guages 2 1/8 size and a 5" monster tach with memory. There was room for water temp, oil press. volts and the the tach, the extra space i left for switches The fuel guage is on a panel in the center of the dash on a panel with my fuses/ relays.

I used the mech temp water guage and had to kind of McGyver a fitting where another sender was by the thermostat housing as finding the metric to standard thread adapters was impossible. Ditto for the oil press, for that i tapped a bolt that fit the old sender location with the NPT of the oil line fitting.
The rest was pretty straight forward, Auto meter makes a fuel guage that ohm,s out the right way.... I ge t to see how it all works soon, just bolted up the clutch tonight and am trying to make the last ICSCC race at Seattle in Oct.

The VDO kits come with metric fittings. Might want to look into that Spode.

Default aftermarket guages

spode134,

any pictures? your setup sounds exactly like what I'm trying to do. I was looking at the autometer guages but didn't see a speedometer. I'm pretty sure I need one to get an inspection sticker here in MA.

Thanks

Tass,

What did you use to clean the interior of your car with? I have recently seen pictures of your track car in another thread, do you have any other images of it online?

Thank you.

I tried chem. strippers, heat guns and scraping but all of those are slow and miserable methods. I used a 9" right angle grinder (basically a giant industrial version of the common 4" angle grinder most people have at home). In place of the wheel I used a cup shaped wire brush with twisted rope bristles. This setup absolutly eats through all of that mopped-on body sealer, left over insulation and the black tar-like goo. It's best to go over the interior and zip off any clips and brackets that you don't want because it gets exciting when your killer wire brush hits these. Also helps to work outside.....the shredded sealer will fly everywhere.

Rob,
sorry I ignored your 2nd question..... I don't have a web site with car pics posted but Stan Shaw put a few of them up on the 928racing.net site.

He also posted a large group of pictures from the recent Boston event and the car shows up quite a few times in that group.
