The PRO-SET adapters are very low profile, so they fit nicely.

This is for the factory R12 fittings only. If your car has been converted to R134 the converted fittings may be even more of a interference problem.

If you look at this ebay seller's store, you'll find he has just about everything you could possibly need.

I've been using these when doing R-134a cars or converting. I've been waiting for them to come back in stock 'cause I think I bought all he had on hand.

So I assume the short end of this adapter threads directly onto the R12 low side port on the car. But then the SAE port doesn't look like what the AC hose threads on to. Is there a need for another adapter to thread the hose onto this?
