Default Cam gear comes loose and breaks the camshaft (beware)

I read the recent post regarding the bearing on the air pump going out but these days when I hear someone saying they have a noise at the front of the motor, I ask them to check the cam gear too.

Since I have had both issues with my 1983 S, I think this is more common with older cars. Mine has around 130,000 on it now. One day I came home, revved the motor lightly and thought to myself "what the heck is THAT noise?"

I popped the hood and SOMETHING WAS OBVIOUSLY WRONG. I immediately shut the motor down. Got the ole long handle screwdriver and restarted the motor and started listening to noises. I immediately shut down again when I heard all kinds of noise from the port side cam drive gear.

It was loose. So loose I was reluctant to even drive it to the shop. I therefore hauled it on a car hauler (thats another story). After this event I became aware that this is not necessarily "common" but it's not uncommon either, and since the cam drive is the same for all 928 cars, SOHC or DOHC, everyone needs to check this. The DOHC versions have more stress on the drive gear too.

In any case, this is something everyone should check, or ask their mechanic to check. Here is a link to more info.

It's not an uncommon problem with the 83 Camshaft. Even the replacement camshaft that I ordered, even though well packed arrived broken. One thing I did notice is a very fine hairline crack on the cam gear. Not sure if that was a before or after crack though or even if it was related.

That's what was the cause of my s-4's re-shaping of a few valves. Jim sent me a replacement cam which arrived in good shape along with other need parts. As it happened to the PO's wife I didn't have the oppertunity to hear it. Now all is quiet but I will allways be listening.

Well, don't know if that's my problem, but i cut the airpump belt off and the noise is still there....quite load at the front side of the motor...sort of rattelly/rythmic.....dissappointing as there is only 1500 kms on the TB/WP and a bunch of other stuff i did this summer including a recent radiator tank...well, this way its hard to pile up the miles it thats any consolation. Car goes to the mech tomorrow on a flat bed. Hope like hell its nothing serious.
