Well... Both have been, but the 928 had the Yokos. Well behaved in corners in that they lose grip smoothly. I liked them, but went to Kumhos as they're a bit cheaper.

Street tires with full tread when pushed hard at a track seem to chunk rather quickly. You rip the edges off the tread blocks. The Kuhmo dot legal "Race tires" Victor racer Tirerack will for a fee heat cycle and shave them. Being cheap I heat cycle my own and "shave them" at the same time in a short run session then switch to already seasoned used tires for the rest of the day. After 24 hours the new tires will have cured (rubber molecules relink ?) and be ready to run. Which is why I have 12 wheels for the car including the street 17 Inch rims. It is a very good idea to have spare wheels and tires at the track just in case you flat spot a tire or bend a wheel in a small OOPS ! it does not end your day or weekend. It also makes it possible to drive home !

And these tires can be rotated left to right to minimized one sidedness wear?

Hey - who keeps putting all of these right turns in at the track!

The Yokos are directional. I've swapped them left/right by having them flipped on the rims. Some people just swap side and then the tires are turning backwards. On my car, with about 1.5 degrees camber, the outside seems to wear first so flipping them gets more out of the tires.

Jim, I admire your cheapness, but heck, how cheap can you be if you have collected 12 wheels?

Heat cycling improves the longevity/wear of the tire?

Don't worry, my case of idiotitis is not contagious.

Jim, you are among the first here to mention Victoracers. They used to be as low as $135 which would be a tempting price if it were there today.

In spite of your stockpile of wheels, are you able to tell how many track days you can get out of a single set?

Thanks.

I do not have a good feel for how many hours on a set but they seem to last for several days even when we double team the car and my Son in law also drives. I run the Streets of willow which is a short tight 1.1 mile 12 turn track which involves a LOT of braking and cornering much harder on tires than most larger tracks. I run 7x15 phone dial rims with 225x50x15 tires and the car is much quicker than it is on 235x17, 275x17 street tires. I have a hardwired lap timer and can compare all of our laps.

I'll cast a vote for the Avon Tech-R.

They are, essentially, slicks with two circumferential groves molded in at a depth of 4/32", so they do not need to be shaved. At $160 for 225/50ZR16 from the Tire Rack they are the same price as shaved Kumho's. And, since they are non-directional, you can rotate them front to rear or side to side.

I'm cheap, like Jim, so I did my own heat cycling by taking a blast up Hwy 29 through Napa County and then took them off and set them aside until the first autocross.

Size matters.

A number of tires are available in 17 and 18 inches that are not made in 16 inches. I think Avons are one and most serious racers are using 17".

James - Looking for tires for stock S4 rims?

as MK said "pushing the car to the limit wears the tire out, weight is not much of a factor."

Because we only get to DE a few times a year (Haven't been able to in OVER a year - track messed up by Ivan)...I drive the POO POO outta my car. If I get a WEEKEND or 2 outta my tires, I am HAPPY.

The other factor with these cars...if you don't have LSD - you are gonna really wear out the rears with inside tire spin in hard turns.

Yes. Stock S4 rims. I wouldn't be opposed to putting track tires or otherwise on my set of 16x7 S rims either.
