Default Laguna Seca Videos--????

How fast are they going (straights & Turns)? Hard to tell from the videos.

Also--looking at the turns (a lot of turns vs. short straights), would a super-lightweight car (a la Lotus Elise with a good race package--high lat. holding power) have a significant advantage there?

And, finally, if someone knows--what car(s) run the fastest around the track?

who are they?

anderson gets to about 135 on the main straight, while the 5 liter holbert car gets to around 125mph tops. anderson runs 1:35ish and i run 1:40ish per lap
From the end of the last turn ll , from the exit birm to the start finish line takes me 7 seconds while it takes Anderson about 6. turn 2 is in the 40mph range while most others range from 60 to 80 mph
2nd gear runs to about 75mph, so you get the idea.

lightweight cars always have advantages, but the lotus is not powerful enough, and very narrow with little tires. but im sure a radical version of the car with more hp could be very fast. Anderson runs 0-60 in about 3.5 seconds, like the other speedGT cars. it would take some bigger power for the Lotus to do this.

the fastest cars we have seen on the track are the porsche cup car with the motorsport upgrade or the GT3RS ALMS version for somewhat of a relative to a street car. The GT1 class of ALMS runs the corvette, austin db9, maseratti and saleen . all fast. fastest with fenders is the audi R8.
times being 1:27, 1:22, 1:15 respectively, with the record being around 1:10 for a CART and close to that for the little carts too!

Mark pretty much summed it all up. I've ridden in a Motorsport Elise and those things are quite nimble but don't really accelerate that well above 90mph. Too little hp to overcome the drag & frontal area.

Track record is a 1:07 set by Helio Castro-Neves in a Champcar a few years ago. Last year atthe Monterey Historics, a Ferrari test driver tried to break that record in a 2004 F1 car but only managed a 1:09. If you got Schumacher over here in their current car with a few days testing, I think the 1:00 barrier would be in jeopardy.

I found this...I thought it was around 1:08.?? but you were right!

TRACK RECORDS: Qualifying (one lap) – 2000, Helio Castroneves, 118.969 mph (1:07.722). Race – 2003, Patrick Carpentier, 107.9986 mph (1:48:11.023), based on 87 laps (194.706 miles).

Currently my best time is 1:06.690....in a 1989 Sauber Mercedes C9 with 1192hp...too bad its in GT4!! :>)

superbikes run in the 1:30 range too. with the back of their packs , still pro, running 1:40. Just think, a pro driver on a motocycle with slicks, running about the same time as the ole holbert car! braking and cornering is just not there on a bike. (sure looks like it on TV though!) this is when i see a bike on the mountain roads up for a little challenge, they are very surprised to see me pull away!! (ie, not pro, not the bike that a superbike is, and no slicks!!)

I dont think cart is 7 seconds behind F1 on a track like laguna!

I do remember a comparsion at a big time track in europe with the bikes vs F1.
the time difference was like 1:15 vs 1:40 on that particular track. (even though the 0-100mph was a shade better on the superbikes!l

You bet they're permitted. Laguna is the host of the US Grand Prix for the MotoGP championship. In July, Nicky Hayden qualified on pole at 1:22 on a 990cc V5 Honda w/ ~250 hp and weighing 150 kg.

I just looked at the race results for Montreal (Canadian GP and Champcar race) and it looks like they're about 6 sec apart on a 2.7 mile track. So maybe 4-5 sec diff at Laguna. 1:02 at Laguna. That would be amazing.

Good observations on how tight Laguna is. Mark K. do you remember what those shifter karts were turning there? I recall they were a few seconds faster than the fastest Porsches, including the 917s and the Nissan CanAm cars that were there at that first US Sports Car Invitational we all went to a few years back.
This year, they will be running a Moto-GP there for the first time in many years, so it will be interesting to see what real state of the art race bikes will lap. Those are the bikes that race in europe and make our Daytona running Superbikes look kinda silly. I understand that Mazda raceway really had to lobby hard to get the big boys to come race there...The FIM(federation Int. Motorcycle) who runs the GP bike series said Laguna was way too tight and slow and they would not allow a GP race there...but someone pulled some strings and they are going to give it a try.
I found Laguna fun but frustrating because there are no real fast corners or combos, but rather many sharp corners with short connecting sections of track and many many yellow flags..

Ok,

References were made to GT3 and GT4--

I assume that they are classes for racing.

Can anyone tell me the various classes?

I thought those were the FAST rides at Laguna Seca. A pretty tight track in my opinion with some fun and classic corners, but nothing to "sink your teeth into". Not many long sustained corners (like the 8/9 complex at Willow Springs, the turn one two three combo at Thunderhill or the Carosel at Sears or..Just a bunch of pretty quick "entry/exits" connected by short straights(except for the "famous" turn) Very good job from Mark A and Joe F to whip all the POC crowd except the Turbos..Laguna must be perfect for them..the turbos. Get out of the corner and pointed right, then NAIL it! Good track for that.
