I'm reminded of the Supercharged 1937 Cord motor car.
I have a friend up the street from me that restores them and V-16 Vintage Cadillacs.
I remember touring his shop while he had a Cord 810 in there for restoration, and the interior had been pulled out. There, inside the passenger compartment, at the top of the transmission tunnel, was a nasty jagged hole, patched over with a plate.
He explained to me that the Cord's engine sat back-to-front in the engine bay, (bellhousing to the front in this front-wheel drive vehicle) and this mod was done at the shops and dealerships to service the timing chain. It was pretty much cut an access hole or pull the motor. I guess most of the Cords he sees have had that modification done to them at some point in their life.
I've also heard of this done at the Mercedes-Benz dealerships on the 300-series cars to repair or adjust the shifter linkages. They lift the carpet, cut a hole in the floor, fix/adjust the shifter rails, and put it back down.
