Congrats to all! Sounds like it was another great race. I need to get back into it before they outlaw it.

I managed to get a ticket coming back home from last year's Pony for 109mph. Not a cheap one, $447.00. I was playing with a friend in his Firehawk, 1 mile earlier he would have tagged us for 150+mph. My friend got tagged for 107 also. The officer paid his wage for the next couple of weeks out of that. I asked him if he could give us a break since we were pulled over waiting for him once he got turned around and there were no other cars on the road, he informed me that he was giving us a break by not taking us to jail. Gee, thanks officer....

Funny thing, the officer told my buddy that his Firebird couldn't have caught my Porsche. He believed we were racing at the slower speed. It might have really rocked his world if he knew what speed we had been going.

I have to admit that the race stickers all over my car and my helmet/driving suit lying in the car probably didn't help the situation out much.

Anders, it is all about REVENUE around here, and not about SAFETY. Welcome to the U S of A.

Write this down: The price of Liberty is eternal vigilance. (At least around here, anyway.)

I used Nicoles V1 and it made no change since the CHP officer was right after a hill and the Nevada guys use instant on..

Anders,

Was the Highway Patrol speed trap just coming into Winnemuca? We heard a squak out of the V1 and came over the hill and he was under the overpass in the median.

What car were you in. We saw a 944 pulled over by two cops just after that. Was that you? We all probably need to exchange cell #'s so if we need help we can call someone.

Glad there was no Jail!!!!!!!!!!!!

A few events ago I go stopped by the Winnemuca sherriff for 83 in a 75. No ticket. You'd think the guy would have something better to do.

Oh man, first rule along I-80....DO NOT SPEED when approaching Winnemucca, Elko, etc. Be real careful, they are just waiting for you as you approach town. And at night, watch for the blue reflectors which indicate an approaching turn-out in the median....cops like to sit between the lanes and get you as you go by.

What Rich said. Anders can attest that I take it real easy for the entire length of I-80 now.

Yep, that was me in the white 944S2. I saw you drive by and take off at the next exit.

Anders, here is what a little American bird told me as he flew into my sunroof and perched on my head:

1) Always, always, always, slow for the towns. Never break the limit in one of the little towns. Think about it. Whose mother, daughter, son, etc. lives in those towns? Along I 80 that takes but about three minutes and you're out of there again and the hammer goes down again in free air. That is true for all little towns. Just think about it for awhile.

2) Never do it in Winnemucca. As Bill said, what else does Smokey have to do? Bust prostitutes? Once on the way to Boise a bear followed me the entire length of the town from city limit to city limit. At the exit of town, he turned around to find someone else. Guess he needed some fast cash.

You are exactly right....there are some police deptmartments in other states where the majority of their budget comes from tickets! I have heard horror stories of citites that are "nearby" to a major freeway (but don't actually own any land adjacent to it) and still poach like mad for speeders! It sucks. Luckily for us it is not that common in CA!

Except for King City, of course.

Glad Anders did not have to go to jail.

How fast did the cop say you were going, Anders?

Congrats to George and all the Pony Express drivers.
I am sure its fun, and scarey as well. We all know how much preparation it
takes to run in an event like that. Hats off to you all!

I'm going to join you someday - its on my "to do" list.

Here are a few 'funny' stories from Western Nevada and the trips to Open Road events.
My first trip to Elko (as a spectator/volunteer for the Silver State Classic): Of course, I got "racer's disease" while at the event in my 88 S-4, so headed home, appx. 50 miles east of Winnemucca on I-80, I was cruising along at about 120, happy as could be. "Wheep-Wheep" goes the V-1, so I stamp the brake pedal and almost lock em up. "Aha" think I. "I've beat the man another time"..But the oncoming Trooper starts his flashers and I glance down to my speedo to see..."Sheis, I am still going 95!" felt like I was 'crawling'.. So, the trooper whips a U-ie and we pull over, I jump out in my flip-flops, shorts and new Silverstate Classice event T-shirt. He allows as to how "lottsa you racer dummies been speeding past here today.." Then, he professes his admiration for the 928 and says "I always wanted to "try one on"..I say, "Go ahead, jump in, see how she fits"..So, he does. But of course, his Smokey Bear hat won't fit under the roof, so I offer to hold it for him. Then, I try THAT on while he sits behind the wheel of the Shark, I stand there in my shorts and flip-flops with his Smokey Bear hat on....Roll reversal, I guess. Must been some sight to all the passing traffic...
After that, I decide never to use I-80 again on my way to and from those events. I swing down and take Hwy 50, "The Loneliest Road in America" according to the hype. This is fairly accurate, with many stretches of straight deserted smooth pavement with sometimes 20-50 miles of 'sight distance'. You top one divide, and can see the road all the way to the next summit, through a big wide desert valley, without any side roads, billboards, or other hiding places for highway police. This road cuts through Fallon, Nv. the home of the Top Gun fighter school, and re-enters civilization near Salt Lack, Utah. So, I usually like to make a few "test runs" out here, pushing up to....ummm..160> . Don't want to do anything "un-safe" so I keep it down some...
Well, three times so far, when out there in the middle of nowhere, without a care in the world other than how the car is feeling and what kinda music is on...."Wheep wheep!" I hear the V-1 go..."What the f---?!" "There is no body within 25 miles of us, I can SEE the friggin road, and nobody is here!".....But then, literally, 'out of the blue' here comes a Tomcat fighter, cruising up on my '9 o'clock', a few feet off the desert floor, the pilot waving at me, and you know he's just laughing his *** off behind his O2 mask. It seems they get a kick out of "painting" a fast moving car with their target radar and watch the motorist freak out and slam the brakes out in the middle of nowhere. PS, I don't care how many superchargers you have on your 928, you won't win a "roll-on" with a Tomcat. Don't ask me how I know this..

Whoops! First sentence should say..."...to Ely for the Silverstate Classic..." Ely vs Elko, quite the different towns...Gotta love the Ely 'Parade of competators' held in the evening prior to the event right down Main Street, with the high school band playing, etc..

That's a great story Don. I can also attest to the fact that there are strange bleeps on the V-1 on Hwy 50 in the middle of nowheresville and I go blind scanning the mirages up and down the road in both directions searching for a bear or two. Maybe that explains why I never saw any out there. My experience with 50 is that it is anything but the lonliest road in the country, and I found a lot of oncoming traffic which scares me because when they pull out to pass they can't accurately judge my closing speed as I am approaching them.
Lots of stretches like you describe though and then all of a sudden a triangular "turn" sign with an advisory speed of 45 or some other outrageous speed. Got to pay attention. The problem I found last July was BUGS and BIRDS !! Hordes of bugs, almost like a rainstorm and the wipers would go on and then the birds would be sitting in the middle of the road lunching on the dead bugs the cars kill. The *#$%@*!! birds would wait until the last minute to abandon their meal, and then they would fly up and directly into the path of the 928...at rather high speeds. Splat. So on the return trip I checked with someone in Nevada to verify that 50 was free of bugs and birds, after almost losing a windshield to three of them.

My advice is to check with the Bears before leaving and plan your route accordingly to avoid bug migrations. Huge grasshoppers brown out the sky. When I got to Indianapolis I spent 2 hours removing them from the radiator, and front of the car. There are still a bunch in there I have trouble reaching.
