Default Possible to tow with a Tow Bar?

I might have an opportunity to get a parts car (doesn't run, manual trans) and will have to pick it up myself.

Just wondering if I can use a Tow Bar (I have a universal style that takes 2 x 1/2" holes on each side to mount the attachment--these need drilled into the metal bumper or other solid body parts)?

I did tow a BMW 325es from Chicago to PA (550 miles)--worked fine. This would be a bit less (300 miles) if it works out.

I thought about getting a Tow Dolly, but U-Haul won't rent to me because I have an Explorer (something about them flipping over?).

Any issues or, is it too hard to get to the metal and get the bumper cover off to tow?

Thanks!!

C.S. Mo towed one 928 with another clear across the country, as I recall.

Here is his 928 website.

I see no mention of the trip there. Send him an email (addy on webpage). My memory could be faulty about this. I believe DEVEK was involved in the car sale - call Susan and ask her about this. She or Marc will be able to tell you how to mount the hitch at the very least.

Default 928 Tow Bar

Haven't had time to update my site in a while, but here's some pictures: 928 Tow

I towed the black car with the blue car from Belmont, CA to Watertown, MA. Unfortunately I managed to smooosh my camera while putting the tow hitch on the blue car so, pictures after that are few.

At any rate, the tow bar is attached to the front tow hook mounting points on the black car. I suspect that this would be more difficult to do with an S4 type spoiler.

The tow hitch on the blue car replaces the stock bumper beam.

Can you give me more details on:

"the tow bar is attached to the front tow hook mounting points on the black car"?

Did you have specific attachments for the Black car--something you modified, bought, etc?

I have a universal tow bar ($50 ebay special--used it to get a 325es back from Chicago--worked OK, but I had to attach it to the tow hooks themselves (worked OK, but the 325 could move forward and backward by about 5" due to the way the attachment was made--did freak me out the first couple of times when it suddenly stopped (after my car had already stopped).

Thanks!!

I'll see if I can take some pictures later today/tomorrow - I made the entire assembly...

Default Tow Bar Pics

Sorry it took so long.. I added a 'real' page for the tow bar/tow hitch... The very rusty current pictures are at the bottom of the page.
