Default Headlight Question

The headlights on my 83 928S no longer come up evenly. The right one stops about 1/2 short of full up. I can pull it the rest of the way but the assembly comes out of the spring loaded detent on the driving arm.

Is the some sort of adjustment that I can't find or is something bent?

Phil,
Hard to say - you need to remove the wheel well liner & front splash guard (you need to take the wheel off) and have a look in there. There is an up-stop, but its more likely something else is getting in the way. Hopefully when you get in there it will be obvious why its not moving full range.

The screws that clamp the bucket to the rotating bar may be loose enough that it slipped... or there may have been an impact on that light... also check the little ball/socket thingy at the base of the lamp itself(remove pod cover to check). If you haven't been in there yet, I recommend a short, right angle ratcheting phillips to get the pod cover off -- less risk of scratching the paint.

I believe Dave is right that the attachment to the bar that side must be loose or have slipped since otherwise I don't see how one side can go all the way up and the other not - the bar should lock them together - at least in the up position. Still you need to find out what caused it. As Dave said - the adjuster locator cup/ball - if popped out - could move the lens & cover back a little - but probably only a small amount - say ~1" back at the top - sounds like its much worse than that....

Let us know what you find...

I took the whole thing out of the car. The shaft is bent and the arm that actually drives the headlight is cracked. Probably unseen damage from a deer strike earlier this year. Not sure if the insurance will still cover it or not. Either way, time to order some new parts.
