Ok, so I buy this 928 for a song and a dance. find out that rats have chewed through the plug wires and vac lines. Repair the aforementioned rodent snacks, fix 2 bad relays (jump), and viola! Car starts! runs for several minutes then dies. Upon stalling the motor decides to take it upon itself to turn 3 - 4 revs in reverse, sending a huge fireball out through the intake! I figure it's the timing so I "adjust" the ditributor a little, car starts right up and runs better than earlier. Only now whenever the gas is depressed it stalls. Now the car will not start. A it does is crank with no result. Keep in mind that my previous cars were far more simpler to deal with than this (16v jetta, vr6 jetta) and quite frankly I'm a bit intimidated by this car. The car is an 81 Ljet, I do not know if it's an "s" or not. Any suggestions, help, or advice would greatly be appreciated.

Are you sure it did not have a rat nest in the u tube to the plenum that got sucked into the engine ?? Someone posted a photo like that not too long ago.
I would check,
Fuel
Spark, and at the right time.
Timining belt (It might have jumped a tooth)
After all that
Check if you are getting fuel to the rails, make sure the injectors are firing.
Also you might want to check the FP regulator. Sometimes they go out and will suck gas in via vaccum and you will flood out.
If all that checks out, you are probably in for a long hall. Actually the 16V cars are pretty simple compared to an 86 32V.

Bill I noticed that he said the spark was OK after my post but the back fire and running backwards could easily have damaged the belt it may have jumped time skipped. A compression test would determine if the cam timing was close to right. Most likely the belt has jumped BUT since it is a USA 16 valve no damage should happen to the valves. Maybe there are pieces of miceses under the belt covers...

If you blew the MAF out of its connection, the car would start and idle fine until you step on it, at which point you would have air but no fuel. Pull the air cleaner assembly and look to see the MAF is seated correctly.
